Humanities studies human culture through academic disciplines. However, there is a lot more to the arts and humanities than just academic disciplines that study human culture. The arts teach us the past we had and guide us to a better tomorrow. Humanities allow us to 'relate why things are the way they are, get to critically think, and build a solid base for creativity.' Humanities courses encourage imaginative and critical thinking and question assumptions about yourself and the world in which you work. Lifelong advices can be attained by studying humanities. Education from humanities is diverse and varied, and often threatens the existing vision of the world. Humanitarian education enriches one's moral and value-oriented beliefs and allows one to imagine situations outside one's own understanding to better understand and respond to decisions outside one's experience.

Even if I am not a student of the liberal arts, I would still concur with the ideas that are presented in the article. Studying liberal arts has been given a stigma which many believe is a nonbeneficial program and a total waste of time. But in reality, these arts bore ideas that have influenced the world as we know it now. Indeed, we need artists to awaken our souls, kindle our imagination, and lead us to neverland. The arts have given the world that no other matter can offer, which are entertainment and inspiration. Relating the article of Nicholas Kristof, Don’t Dismiss the Humanities to my life, I will apply the three principles mentioned in the article and try to integrate them into my values so that I can properly comprehend them and perform them in my daily tasks.

The first principle, “acknowledging doubts and uncertainty — and then forging ahead”, means that we must tread cautiously to unfamiliarity. But this does not mean that we should push them to the edge. Constructing proper criticism is impartially a key that has the power to mold the future. After deconstructing those uncertainties, we then create something in order to address them. In compliance with this principle, I must understand that different culture possesses unique traditions and that other people may have different perceptions compared to mine. Therefore, I must not judge them for what they are nor what their practices are because in order to eradicate the competition for better value, we simply must respect one another. The second principle,” …to agree on a social contract, but from an “original position” “, means that we ought to have a “blind” system that will eradicate social norms/ stereotypes so that people from the lowest hierarchical class would less likely be harmed. This principle suggests that we start from an original position so that branding towards one’s self would be eradicated. To integrate this into my life, I can advocate equality on my own terms and promote the eradication of stereotyping. The third principle, “moral obligations to animals”, is defined as it is. Animals should not be treated with cruelty. Though they are unlike human beings, they are still part of the creation. In spite of having animals as our main nutrition, it is also worth noting that we must torture them in order to sate our satisfaction. Maybe this is why some people shift to being vegetarian because they can tolerate the cruelty that people inflict on animals just to provide that “quality”. In compliance with this, I can promote awareness in regard to animal cruelty. I post blogs on social media platforms so that people would be aware of how their meals are really prepared.

Humanities have a tremendous impact in the field of teaching because it allows the teacher to reinforce cultural and ethical responsibilities and values. The Humanities help in analyzing our own beliefs and values by comparing them with thinkers of the past and present, allowing us to make informed, culturally and ethically responsible decisions. In regards to this, teachers can not only teach academia but also character. This is what true education is. Furthermore, it allows the teacher to look past every wall covering the student and into his heart and soul so that he may guide him in order to guide others.

Through shifting attitudes, instilling beliefs, and transmitting interactions through time and space, art affects culture. It also affects basic self-sense. It also retains what fact-based historical records are unable to do: how it felt to live at a particular time in a particular place. Art is communication in this sense; it allows people from different cultures and periods to interact with each other through images, sounds, and stories. Art is often a social change medium. A song, movie, or novel can stir up emotions in those who find it, inspiring them to rally for change. Art also has utilitarian social influences. In math and literacy, there is a demonstrable, positive correlation between the grades of schoolchildren and their involvement with drama or music activities.

Studying the arts can greatly affect the study of culture because it influences its base from perspectives that are based on literary works or revolutionary innovations. It can be said that arts and culture are intertwined because art is history and history is part of the culture. Consider the photographic discovery for example. It has totally changed the world in so many ways, from art itself and how the concept of drawing borders has been blown up by seeing bits broken off from a photograph. With this, the culture of capturing breathtaking scenery is through photographs. Another example is literary works. In studying a particular literary work, we are granted knowledge in regard to what culture is present at that time. A great example of this is Noli Me Tangere. Moreover, arts can also impact the Computer Science profession. Studying arts can lead to the development of analytical thinking skills, which are key in gathering information, articulating, visualizing, and solving complex problems. These sets of skills are the requirement for a computer specialist must have because in order to evaluate complex information into logic, one must have high analytical thinking skills. In addition, studying the arts can lead enhance decorative layouts which can be helpful in game development and graphic design.

If I were the author of the article, Don’t miss the Humanities, I would like the consequences of not having humanities in science-related matters because society does not realize that humanities are very important in science. Science and technology are meaningless if we lack the ability to conceptualize and think abstractly about the space in which our endeavors in those fields exist. The humanities enable us to make informed decisions about what is best for ourselves and the people around us. The world's problems spin in an endless cycle. If only we had a majority of people educated in the humanities who could look at a problem and think 'this has happened before, this is what took place, here are some ways we could go about this differently.' One cannot have Science without humanities but one can have humanities without science. If we do not understand this, we are lost. To fully understand science, one must have an understanding of the 'human' nature or God's creation.

Art is important in an individual’s existence because it influences imagination, challenges perspectives, and stimulates emotions. Furthermore, it allows us to look at life from a different perspective and also enables us to critically analyze any given subject, concrete or abstract, from a whole new perspective. We will be able to discern the smallest details in everyday objects, and humor our imagination with orthodox ideas. In addition, art has the ability to enhance our imagination. We get to experiment through unconventional methods, granting our minds the freedom to roam the vast expanse of our imagination. Art brings us to fascinate our lives in a whole new aspect. The bounds of art are limitless as well as its purpose.

I did not have any difficulties in accepting this course because ever since I have been fond of art. Upon knowing that we had an Art Appreciation course, I was thrilled. However, not all my expectations were met because I thought we would have painted something on a canvas but all other activities were a lot of fun. The activities did not only challenge our creative thinking but also it has enhanced our teamwork because a lot of projects were group based. I really enjoyed the time when we were studying music and dance because as a performer, these two things were very much close to me. I can say that I learned a lot in music because it has allowed me to learn the basic fundamentals of music theory. With that, I can now view music from a different perspective. Though I had a lot of fun with this course, I did not change my mind about pursuing my computer science program. Despite this, I can still use what I have learned in this course.

I have learned a great deal in cognitive skills through online activities, in which I can now analytically and critically deduce something and comprehend it based on theories in regard to it. In planning my future practices and essentially my future, I know that I cannot simply idly stand by. Through this course, I have realized that everything created is bound to intertwine with another thing and that another thing is connected to the other, and so on. So, I say that my future shall not be brought upon a fixed and closed mindset but rather a flexible one just as the tides go I would so too. Art Appreciation can instill other values in other people. But for me, one thing that art had hit it me with is the general idealism of everything being beautiful and having a purpose. Thank you for everything Sir Maximo Saoz for teaching us a light yet the in-depth experience of the Art world.
