Principles in Guidance and Counseling Services for Students
In the Big Indonesian Dictionary (KBBI) 'principle' means principle (truth that is
the basis for thinking, acting, and so on); basis. In the book Basics of Guidance and
Counseling: Review of Concepts, Theories and Practices by Syafaruddin, et al. (2019: 2224) several principles or principles that must be present in guidance and counseling
activities are explained, namely
1) The principle or principle of confidentiality, which requires that all data and
information of students (clients) who are the target of the service be kept
confidential, namely data or information that should not and should not be known
to others.
2) The principle or principle of voluntariness, which requires the student (client) to
like and be willing to follow/undergo the services/activities intended for him/her.
3) The principle or principle of openness, which requires students (clients) to be open
and not pretend, both in providing information about themselves and in receiving
various information and materials from outside that are useful for developing
themselves.
4) The principle or principle of activity, which requires students (clients) to be able to
participate, encourage and motivate students to be active in every service/activity
given to them.
5) The principle or principle of independence, which shows the general purpose of
guidance and counseling, namely that students (clients) are expected to become
independent individuals.
6) The principle or principle of the present, which requires the problems faced by
students/clients to be related to current conditions. The past and the future are seen
as impacts and are related to what students (clients) do at the present time.
7) The principle or principle of dynamism, which requires the content of services to
always move forward, not monotonously, and continue to develop and be
sustainable in accordance with the integrity and stage of its development from time
to time. 8) The principle or principle of integration, which requires various services and
activities, whether carried out by the guidance teacher or other parties, to be
mutually supportive, harmonious, and integrated.
9) The principle or principle of normativeness, which requires all services and
activities to be based on norms, whether religious norms, laws, regulations,
customs, science, and prevailing customs.
10) The principle or principle of expertise, which requires services and activities to be
carried out based on professional rules with expert workers in guidance and
counseling.
11) The principle or principle of case transfer, which requires parties who are unable to
provide guidance and counseling services appropriately and completely for a
student's (client's) problem to be able to transfer it to a more expert party.
12) The principle or principle of Tut Wuri Handayani, which requires that overall
service can create a nurturing atmosphere (provide a sense of security), develop
role models, and provide stimulation and encouragement, as well as the widest
possible opportunities for students (clients).
