Introduction Ethical behavior is a term used to describe the behavior of citizens in professional contexts and it is commonly judged according to the standards of profession expressed in terms of ethics. People have a different understanding of ethics in their various fields of businesses. Business has a unique knowledge which is specialized in serving four types of entities in an organization: the customer, the employer, the society and the profession (Mohrmann, 2015). A profession must serve the four entities to the fullest in addition to giving technical knowledge (Ilimkhanova, 2014). For instance, employees must be loyal to their employers, be honest to the customers, show respect in their profession and be sensitive to the safety and health of the society. Some values such as respect, loyalty, sensitivity to the safety of the public and honesty must be put into practice in ethics and professionalism. Ethics and professionalism are applied in different situations of an entity. For example, in an engineering context (Ilimkhanova, 2014). There are different types of ethical and moral behaviors in an engineering workplace. To begin with, engineering is the technique of implementing technical mechanisms which makes work easier for the workers. Ethics are acceptable in society as well as the moral behaviors of people. Engineering ethics and morals help society in a good way. Hence engineering ethics is the process of studying policies, values, and decisions that are of moral lessons in a research and engineering practice (Mohrmann, 2015). An engineer in any company or individual farm must apply ethical issues in the workplace. For instance, the ethical issues must be used under situations like designing a product, conceptualization of goods and services and testing of the produced goods and services. The ethical rules and decisions of an engineer must be recognized because they are of importance to society. This is because the services offered by the engineers have an impact on the entire society. Engineers must follow some ethical and moral behaviors in their working environment to avoid conflicts in society. This includes: respecting both themselves and others in the community, honoring the rights of others in the society, keeping promises of agreed upon and keeping promises of others in the workplace, be faithful and honest in their workplace and show gratitude to others by encouraging them to work better. Types of moral issues in an engineering context There different types of moral issues in an engineering context. The commonly known one's micro-ethics and macro ethics (Mohrmann, 2015). The micro-ethics is an approach which stresses on the challenges and problems encountered by engineers on the daily bases. On the other, the macro ethics tackles all the social issues which are unknown or surrounds the engineering environment. These problems can unexpectedly attack the engineering sector both regional and nationwide. Ethics are essential in the workplace of an engineering context. Engineering codes of ethics ensure that the product life cycle of a product run smoothly in the workplace. Ethics enables engineers to design a product in a way that favors the needs of all clients in the society. Engineers manufacture products by considering the nation in terms of pollution and health. The products being made in an engineering farm should not bring any harm to the lives of the people in the society (Ilimkhanova, 2014). The engineering firm gives clear specifications on the products being produced to avoid damaging humans lives. The products produced should expose all the risks to society. All the control measures in the product life cycle in an engineering process must be keenly observed to ensure ethical behaviors in the community. In the procurement of supplies, ethics and moral behaviors in an engineering context ensure that the right resources and facilities are acquired. The resources and the facilities must be free from every harm to human beings and the entire society (Mohrmann, 2015). Ethics in engineering help in the marketing process by selling and promoting healthy produces and services to human beings. In terms of financial phase, engineering ethics allows investors to have confidence while investing on the engineering farm because they are assured of the safety of their finances. On maintenance and operation phase consistency and quality are assured (Ilimkhanova, 2014). Good ethical codes in an engineering farm ensure proper disposal of the waste products hence protecting the lives of both the workers and the society. Finally, ethics helps to improve the quality of the products produced and increases consistency. Professionalism Professionalism comprehensively covers all levels of a certain profession. Professionalism requires responsibilities and skills needed for an engineering profession, and it shows certain attitudes. Professionalism is the art of doing things in a right manner regardless of any feeling towards the person doing it (Mohrmann, 2015). Professionals concentrate on a certain profession and commit themselves to the job with expectations of confirmation. Virtues are ways in which individuals relate to each other, and they involve attitudes, emotions, and motives. Professional responsibility of a person is shown by characteristics such as teamwork, self-governance, proficiency and being public spirited (Mohrmann, 2015). Ethics’ influence on professionalism Ethics have a great influence on professionalism in an engineering workplace. Engineer's actions do not only affect them but also the people surrounding them. Most of their professional decisions must involve ethics (Mohrmann, 2015). Ethics are important in workplaces as well as in every individual's life. In every field of profession, ethics must be conducted. Ethics influence professionalism in several ways. Ethics in an engineering entity leads to integrity. This helps professionals in their professionalism to adhere to rules and regulations in decision making. When engineers possess integrity, it creates a sense of trustworthy to them and to the people surrounding them in the workplaces (Dicks, 2017). Ethics helps engineers to build their character. Ethics is not all about our thoughts but also our role in our professionalism. When engineers possess high morals they will apply the morals in all their behaviors. Engineers with high character are respected and trusted in society because they act honestly. Professional ethics helps engineers to set standards in which every member of the profession can comfortably meet (Mohrmann, 2015). Ethics evaluates the need for information to the society from engineers and the expectations they should have towards them. Hence this makes the engineers competence in their professionalism. As long as members of the engineering profession adapt to the standards laid down their ethical behavior makes them superior in their business (Mohrmann, 2015). Ethics sets out responsibilities and ideals in professionalism in the engineering processes. Additionally, good ethics protect the engineers in their profession as well as the clients. Ethics improves engineer's job, inspires and motivates them. Ethics provides acceptable conduct and guidance in an engineering process as well as creating awareness of issues to the public (Dicks, 2017). Many conflict issues arise in the different field of work. Conflict of the ethical problems arises in areas like business, politics and financial gain. Moral conflict may denote a situation where an individual in an organization acts in his favor for personal gain (Mohrmann, 2015). The main idea of paying concern to the conflicts of ethical and professional issues is that they lead to a lack of trust and confidence in many sectors. Many individual take business, political and financial ethics for personal gains hence causing ethical conflicts in the profession. Contracts that ensure professionalism There are several types of contracts that ensure professionalism, for instance, a general service contract which is used for the purpose of purchasing important labor or manual skills. This kind of services includes transport services, laundry, and Security Guard Services, Cleaning, Clothing, and rental services. Professional contracts are provided under some agreements with the collages by individuals or business firms as a sole contractor. The difference between professional contracts and the rest of the services is trust, belief, and confidence in not only the talents of the people but also in the abilities of individuals performing the given services. Professional contracts are mainly for creative skills (Dicks, 2017). Agreements involving labor are not considered as Profession contracts. Performer contracts are associated with musicians, actors, and dancers. Also, there are several insurance policies that ensure professionalism. Health insurance is a common insurance policy that provides professionalism. The health insurance policy deals with human health and helps doctors to develop their professionalism. May fail to get treatment due to lack of health insurance to cater for the hospital bills. Health insurance is an optional policy because it is not mandated by the government. Life insurance policy ensures professionalism to the parties concerned in matters pertaining to human life. This policy is of importance o married people but also unmarried people can benefit from it (Isaacs, 2015). These types of insurance meet many financial needs like replacing the lost amount of income, paying debts after death and cater for children education. Life insurance policy ensures ethics in the professionalism of both the employers and employees since it covers the lives of the two parties. Employers encourage employees to get some policies to cater to their needs in times of financial disgrace (Mohrmann, 2015). Property Insurance is another form of insurance policy in which most people in society are required to have it, especially when you have a mortgage (Dicks, 2017). It enhances professionalism to most of the bank workers and insurance policy workers. Finally, auto insurance enhances professionalism to financial advisors. Most states commonly prefer this type of insurance because it covers liability (Isaacs, 2015). Penalty A penalty is a kind of punishment imposed on the employees in the workplace due to violating the ethical codes (Isaacs, 2015). Procedures and discipline should be well clarified to the employees in workplace so that the workers can know the penalties for violating them. Penalties are important because they help to reduce wrongful and discriminative actions in an organization. There two types of penalties in workplace: major and minor penalties (Dicks, 2017). Minor penalties evaluate workers tardiness, actions of insubordination, misuse of resources in the office and lack of completing the duties assigned to the employees. Minor penalties include written warnings and oral that reduces job responsibilities and privileges in the workplace. On the other hand major penalties demotions, violence, pay reduction, job transfers. Globalization Globalization has led leads to the integration of societies, cultures and regional economies by the means of transportation, trade, and communication. Globalization involves a combination of technology, economic, social-cultural, biological and political factors. It is essential to deal with ethics in cross-cultural settings (Dicks, 2017). Globalization and cultural issues affect ethics and professionalism in different ways. Due to increased globalization and cultural factors, the interaction between individuals with different skills has been enhanced hence helping people to build their professionalism. Globalization has led to healthy competition between different company’s nationwide hence enhancing new cultures and professions. Globalization ensures the best connectivity between the buyers and sellers hence increasing ethical behaviors among different countries (Isaacs, 2015). Career development has many effects on professionalism and ethics. It enables people to develop ethical standards due to socialization in the community, families, profession, and religion. Ethics have several effects on career development. It values personal believes in society and also influence career choice (Dicks, 2017). Conclusion Ethics and professionalism help in many areas of work places. They help employees in understanding their careers better and practicing the required ethics and morals in work place. Globalization and cultural issues have impact ethics and professionalism of people in an organization. Globalization ensures interaction between different people with different professional’s hence increasing knowledge. Different contracts and insurance policies also help in building ethics and professionalism. Penalties are imposed to the parties which bleach ethical issues in a workplace.
