Stem-Changing/Shoe Verbs (e-ie) All these verbs have the same endings as regular –ar, -er, and –ir verbs. We just have to add a vowel or change the vowel in the middle. They are called “shoe” verbs because if you enclose the ones that get a stem-change, it looks like a shoe. Change the “e” in the stem to an “ie.” Perder – to lose Yo pierdo Nosotros perdemos Tú pierdes Vosotros perdéis Él, Ella, Ud. pierde Ellos, Ellas, Uds. pierden Querer – to want Yo quiero Nosotros queremos Tú quieres Vosotros queréis Él, Ella, Ud. quiere Ellos, Ellas, Uds. quieren Comenzar – to begin Yo comienzo Nosotros comenzamos Tú comienzas Vosotros comenzáis Él, Ella, Ud. comienza Ellos, Ellas, Uds. comienzan *If the verb has 2 “e’s” change the second “e” to “ie.” Preferir – to prefer Yo prefiero Nosotros preferimos Tú prefieres Vosotros preferís Él, Ella, Ud. prefiere Ellos, Ellas, Uds. prefieren Empezar – to begin Yo empiezo Nosotros empezamos Tú empiezas Vosotros empezáis Él, Ella, Ud. empieza Ellos, Ellas, Uds. empiezan Ejemplos: 1. The soccer team loses a lot of games. El equipo de fútbol pierde muchos partidos. 2. The basketball game begins at 7 pm. El partido de baloncesto empieza a las siete. 3. The players want to win tonight. Los jugadores quieren ganar esta noche. 4. Manuel and I don’t want to eat fish. Manuel y yo no queremos comer pescado. 5. I prefer to watch baseball games. Yo prefiero ver los partidos de béisbol.
