Micro Lesson 3 I. RATIONALE: This lesson is being taught to meet grade level Common Core State Standards. II. OVERVIEW Grade Level: 5th Subject(s): English Language Arts Topic of Study: Figurative Language Time Allotment: 45-50 minutes Standards: • • 5.RL.4. Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including figurative language such as metaphors and similes. 5.RI.8. Explain how an author uses reasons and evidence to support particular points in a text, identifying which reasons and evidence support which point(s). Objectives: • • Students will be able to with support define and identify six forms of figurative language with 80% accuracy. Students will be able to analysis song lyrics and identify 6 forms of figurative language in the lyrics with 80% accuracy III. IMPLEMENTATION Procedure: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. 9. Teacher will begin lesson by first asking students to complete a bellwork activity. On the SmartBoard the teacher will have bellwork listed. Teacher will then go around the room asking students to share their responses. Teacher will explain that today we will be working with poetry and more specifically the various tools poets and writers us in their work to convey different meanings. Teacher will pass out handouts for students which list six forms of figurative language (Alliteration, Hyperbole, Metaphor, Onomatopoeia, Personification, and Simile) As a class, they will go over each word and its definition and the example given. Students will work together to come up with their own examples to write on their handouts. Once all forms of figurative language have been addressed teacher will then show various poems of videos that represent each of the six forms and students will be asked to identify which it is showing. Teacher will then introduce activity for the day. 10. Teacher will tell students that we are going to read song lyrics and analysis them to find and highlight the six forms of figurative language (Alliteration, Hyperbole, Metaphor, Onomatopoeia, Personification, and Simile). 11. Teacher will explain that music and song lyrics can be seen as another form of poetry. 12. First, as a class we will listen to the song while following along to the lyrics. 13. Then the teacher will read the first set of lyrics to herself. Stop and see if there is an Alliteration, Hyperbole, Metaphor, Onomatopoeia, Personification, and/or Simile in that set. 14. If there is she will emphasis picking the associating color, highlighting the words that match the word and then continuing on. 15. Teacher will do this several times. 16. Then the teacher will read the next set of lyrics aloud and ask that the students work to find a form of figurative language. 17. When they have found one ask that they place a thumb up on their desk. 18. Teacher will ask each student to share what they found and compare their responses and work together to decide what is correct and why some may have been incorrect. 19. The class will do this several times. 20. Before teacher asks students to begin working on the activity independently, teacher will check for student understanding by first asking the following questions: a. What do you do if you find any of those six form of figurative language? b. What is… 1) Alliteration 2) Metaphor 3) Simile 4) Onomatopoeia 5) Hyperbole 6) Personification 21. Teacher will ask students if they have any further questions. 22. Students begin to work independently to analysis the song lyrics. 23. Teacher will walk around room working with students to ensure they understand the expectations and help to find the figurative language. 24. Students will work until at least 2-3 songs lyrics are fully analyzed. 25. For closure, students will participate in a Kahoot. Technology Integration: • • Teacher will use a projector and computer with powerpoint. Students will use computers with Google Docs and participate in a Kahoot assessment. Differentiated Instruction: • Cognitive delay: Teacher may have powerpoint printed out and given to student the day prior to the lesson so that they may look over the notes. Teacher may also allow student more time to complete the poster/timeline. • • Gifted: If students show high level of understanding in this concept, students would then instead work to write a song/poem and be asked to use the forms of figurative language in their work. ELL: Students could work in pairs to complete the activity. IV. ASSESSMENT Procedure: • Students will be assessed based off of their participation during the lesson. They will be graded on how well they analyzed and identified the different forms of figurative language. Students will also be assessed based on their responses to the Kahoot at the end of the lesson.
