“The Seventh Man” Questions p. 349 #1 - 3 Directions – Answer the Comprehension questions at the end of the story. 1. Recall At what location does the story begin and end? The location the story begins and ends is in a small house in Nagano, Japan. 2. Clarify Why have the people in the group come together? The people in the group have come together because of group therapy. 3. Summarize Describe the tragedy that changed the seventh man’s life. The tragedy that changed the seventh man's life is seeing and failing to rescue his best friend from the storm. This story was about the seventh man's childhood. He talks about his best friend that had a speech impediment. He was like a brother to him, more so than his blood brother. One day they went to play when they knew a storm was coming but planned to leave the beach by the time the storm hit. They knew it was dangerous but went anyway. His best friend got caught in the storm and died. It was very traumatic for the seventh man. He was scared now of the waves, it was his trigger. Yet he once loved the waves and the ocean as he lived by the beach. He has the same recurring nightmare that originated from the traumatic event that happened when he lost his friend to the waves in the storm. He was not able to live the same after this event. He cannot live by the ocean because it reminds him of his friend. He then talks about his life in the present time. He lives a rather ordinary life. He stopped having nightmares when he moved out of his hometown. He never married because he was not able ever to sleep with a woman though he has been in love. He felt that he'd be sharing his burden since he was so altered after this one event. He stayed away from his hometown and ocean and pools for 40 years. He was scared his nightmares would come true. He enjoyed swimming but was so freed from drowning now. His father died of cancer. At the end of the story, the seventh man's life is calm and he overcomes his fear. The moral of the story is to face your fears and not run away from them because in his experience it only made it worse.
