COMPARISON DEVICES SIMILE: A limited comparison between two usually unrelated things using the word “like” or “as”. Examples: Trade stalks like a giant through the land Does it dry up like a raisin in the sun? Or fester like a sore, and then run? METAPHOR: An implied comparison between two usually unrelated things. Examples: Life as an Octopus Life is a broken-winged bird that cannot fly. Life is a barren field frozen with snow. DIFFERENCE BETWEEN METAPHOR AND SIMILE: •The difference between a simile and a metaphor is that a simile requires either “like” or “as” to be included in the comparison, and a metaphor requires that neither be used. •When it comes to using metaphors in poetry, a poet can either put in individual metaphors, or they may make the entire poem a metaphor for a deeper, more significant concept. Briefly giving human PERSONIFICATION: characteristics to inanimate objects, ideas, or animals. Example: Poor Art with struggling gasp, Lies strangled, dying in his mighty grasp. SYMBOL: An object, color, or word that is meant to represent a much deeper and more significant concept. Examples: Trade as Brain, Art as Heart; the Fount of Truth IMAGERY: Using words to create a picture in the reader’s mind. Example: He locks his grimy fingers round her snowy throat so tender POETIC ANALYSIS POETIC ANALYSIS •Poems often present puzzles for the reader to solve. •Because poetry is uninhibited in what it can express, and can get creative in the language it can use to express it, poetic analysis has to focus both on SOUND and MEANING. •Poetry is an art form as well as a literary genre. POETIC ANALYSIS •Poetry Analysis is examining the independent elements of a poem to understand the literary work in its entirety. •Analyzing poems line by line allows you to break poems down in order to study their structure, form, language, meter/rhythm, and theme. LYRICAL VS. NARRATIVE POETRY LYRICAL POETRY •Poems used to express abstract ideas, feelings, or emotions. •They are not telling their own stories; they are expanding on thoughts. •Typically written in first person. •All of the poems we’ve read thus far have been lyrical poems. EXAMPLE OF LYRICAL POETRY: “FIRE AND ICE” BY ROBERT FROST Some say the world will end in fire, Some say in ice. From what I’ve tasted of desire, I hold with those who favor fire But if it had to perish twice… I think I know enough of hate To say that for destruction ice Is also great And would suffice. NARRATIVE POETRY •A narrative poem tells a story. •It is usually written in rhymed and metered verse – i.e., it has rhythm and meter. •This is using poetic style to tell a story. •Commonly found in ballads (‘The Highwayman’ by Noyes), children’s books (How the Grinch Stole Christmas, etc.), myths (‘The Lady of Shallot’ by Tennyson), etc. EXAMPLE OF A NARRATIVE POEM— “JABBERWOCKY” BY LEWIS CARROLL •‘Twas brillig, and the slithy toves Did gyre and gimble in the wabe All mimsy were the borogroves And the momeraths outgrabe. •“Beware the Jabberwock, my son! The jaws that bite, the claws that catch! Beware the Jubjub bird, and shun The frumious Bandersnatch!” •He took his vorpal sword in hand, Long time his manxome foe he sought So rested he by the tumtum tree And stood a while in thought. •And while in uffish thought he stood, The Jabberwock, with eyes of flame, Came whiffling through the tulgey wood And burbled as it came! • One-two,one-two, and through and through The vorpal blade went snicker-snack! He left it dead, and with its head, He went galumphing back! • “And has thou slain the Jabberwock? Come to my arms, my beamish boy! Oh frabjous day! Calloo!
