Eco 355 Ecology, Sept 6th, 2024 Temporal variation in the environment - change in environmental conditions over periods of time Spatial variation in the environment - the description of how environmental conditions change over space Phenotypic tradeoff- a situation in which a given phenotype experiences higher fitness in one environment, whereas other phenotypes experience higher fitness in other communities - Phenotypic plasticity - the ability of a single genotype to produce multiple phenotypes - behavioral changes will be fast, physiological changes will be slow Acclimation- an environmentally induced change in an individual's physiology Many organisms have to evolve adaptations to variation in (1) enemies, (2) competitors, and (3) mates Adaptatuiionsin various enemies Prey will adapt adaptations that will allow them to evade predators and predators will have adaptations that will allow them to catch their own Inducible defenses and offenses Chemical cues- released in the water, waste that predators can pick up on Daphnia responses to a predator (1) Change in reproduction - make babies sooner within the lifecycle, so they are generally smaller and tend to have more offspring that are also smaller (2) The get larger- grow helmet for protection (3) Will prefer to be at the top of the water colum so they can prefern to eat their food, when no prey is present Herb induced Responses by Plants - Pmats will grow intrusions/ hairs coming off their epidermis , aphids are more likely to avoid plants that have a lot of triphones
