Contemporary Issues and Methods in Pharmaceutical Statistics Abstract Pharmaceutical biostatistics, a branch of statistical science, has as its main focus the applications of statistics in public health, the life sciences, and the pharmaceutical industry. Modern pharmaceutical biostatistics, beyond just a simple application of statistics, is a confluence of statistics and knowledge of multiple intertwined fields and often requires innovations across disciplines. Over the years biostatistics has gradually shaped its own unique characteristics and approaches. There are at least three characteristics of modern biostatistics: (1) in-depth engagement in the application fields that require a penetration of knowledge across several fields, (2) high level complexities of data, because the data are longitudinal, incomplete or latent; because they are heterogeneous due to a mixture of data or experiment types, because of high-dimensionality that may make meaningful reduction impossible, or because of extremely small or larger in size, and (3) dynamics, the speed of development in methodology and analyses has to match the fast growth of data with a constantly changing face. In this talk, we will discuss contemporary issues and methods in pharmaceutical statistics, including (1) multiple testing strategies, (2) pharmaceutical decision and game theory, (3) noninferiority trial design, (4) adaptive trial design, (5) clinical trial globalization and multiple-region trial issues, (6) missing data imputation and analysis, (7) multivariate and multistage survival data modeling, (8) meta-analysis, (9) data mining and signal detection, (10) Monte Carlo simulation, and (11) Bayesian method and applications. The presentation will be based on my upcoming book with Springer: Modern Methods in Biostatistics.
