What is HTML?
Hyper Text Markup Language
Instructions that tell the browsers how to show the stuff on
your web page
Examples:

Interpreted Language
Unlike C, HTML is “interpreted” instead of “compiled”
Interpreted programs are converted to binary on the fly each
time they are run
Compiled programs don’t have to be. They can be converted
to an executable form once, and then keep running from
their binary form.
Fun Fact: Java is both. The compiler converts Java to Bytecode
(intermediate language), which is then interpreted by the
Java Virtual Machine (JVM). This allows Java to be machine
independent. +
Webpages are browser dependent
A website opened in Safari may look different than one
opened in Internet Explorer +
HTML Tags
Instructions in HTML are called tags
This is what tags look like:
= Opening tag - tells the browser where a section begins.
= Closing tag - tells a browser where the section ends.
Generally, some content goes between them. +
HTML Element
An HTML element is everything from the start tag to the end
tag:
An HTML element starts with a start tag / opening tag
An HTML element ends with an end tag / closing tag
The element content is everything between the start and the
end tag
Some HTML elements have empty content
Empty elements are closed in the start tag +
Let’s Create an HTML file!
Create a folder with your name on your desktop
Open Notepad++ under programs.
Create a text file called “test.html”
This is where you will program your website.
Make sure the document is saved with a .html extension +
The Basic Web Page
(Your title goes here)
(Your content goes here)
Tells the browser to interpret the text as html.
Everything on your webpage goes between these tags
Tells browser additional info about your page.
Marks the main content of the page. +

Come up with a title
Copy commands that were shown
Remember:
… tags enclose everything on your web page
… tags enclose … tags and
tags enclose the name of your website.
<body>… </body> should enclose the rest of the website’s
