Chapter 1 Choices That Effect Income 1-1 The Changing Job Market Job Market The wide variety of job and career choices that exist at one point in time. Changes as the need for different types of workers evolve. Example: Telephone Operator & Typist 1-1 The Changing Job Market Job Skills Specific tasks or procedures a person can do to complete a job. Technical skills = Microsoft Office Non-technical skills = Customer Service Job skills change as new goods and services emerge. 1-1 The Changing Job Market The Occupational Outlook Handbook Published by the U.S. Department of Labor Contains data about the major job areas in the U.S. 1-1 Career Choices and Income Careers requiring more skill, training, education, and in demand usually pay more. Ex. Doctor vs. Salesclerk The pay scale for each career will vary by location. 1-1 Career Choices and Income Job Title A name, made up of a word or phrase, that describes the main duties or tasks of a particular job. Job Description The details of a specific job. Lists the job tasks and duties, required skills, education, and experience. *Refer to posters 1-1 Choices Depend On Values & Goals Ethics A system of moral values that people consider acceptable. Value A principle that reflects the worth you place on an idea or action. “How important is this to me?”  Influences the choices and decisions people make. 1-1 Choices Depend On Values & Goals Goals A plan that is based on values or desired outcomes. Affects a person’s behavior in order to achieve what he/she wants. 1-1 Education Choices Formal Education Attending classes to learn required skills and knowledge for a specific job. Informal Education On-the-job training or learning as you go. You may also train yourself with specific readings and practice.
