EGG IN VINEGAR EXPERIMENT Hypothesis – If an egg is placed in white vinegar for 48 hours, then the egg shell will dissolve and the egg will become bouncy because the acid in the vinegar reacts with calcium carbonate and produces carbon dioxide(chemical reaction takes place) Dependant variable – the egg shell Controlled variable – egg and vinegar Materials A tall glass An egg White vinegar Method Step 1 – Place an egg in a tall glass Step 2 – Pour approximately 250ml white vinegar over the egg Step 3 – Allow it to stand for 48 hours ( Observe after 24 hours) Step 4 – Remove egg from vinegar and observe Step 5 – Allow it to stand in an empty container (air) for 24 hours. Step 6 – Observe what the egg feels and looks like after. Reactants - Egg shell and vinegar Products - Carbon dioxide and calcium acetate Chemical reaction Egg shell( Calcium carbonate) + Vinegar( Acetic acid)  Calcium Acetate + Water + Carbon dioxide CaCO3+ 2 CH3COOH = Ca(CH3COO)2 + H2O + CO2 Findings and Outcome When vinegar was added the egg placed in the water, I saw bubbles forming on the shell. The bubbles are carbon dioxide (CO2). Vinegar is an acid called acetic acid (CH3COOH). Eggshells are made up of calcium carbonate (CaCO3). The acetic acid in the vinegar reacts with the calcium carbonate in the eggshell to make calcium acetate plus water and carbon dioxide that resulted in bubbles forming on the surface of the shell. The chemical reaction keeps happening until all of the carbon in the egg is used up. I noticed that the egg got a little bigger after soaking in the vinegar. This occurred because some of the water in the vinegar solution travelled through the egg’s membrane in an effort to equalize the concentration of water on both sides of the membrane. This flow of water through a semipermeable membrane is called osmosis. When I took the egg out of the vinegar it was soft because all of the carbon floated out of the egg in those little bubbles. When I leave it out in air for 24 hours, it became hard. The calcium left in the egg shell stole the carbon back from the carbon dioxide that's in the air we breathe. Conclusion In the experiment the bubbles are formed because of the chemical reaction between the acid in vinegar and the calcium carbonate. The chemical reaction continues until all of the calcium carbonate is used up, leaving only the membrane behind. My hypothesis was correct as the egg shell was dissolved. It's hard! When you leave it out in air for 24 hours The calcium left in the egg shell stole the carbon back from the carbon dioxide that's in the air we breathe.
