UNDERWATER WIRELESS OPTICAL COMMUNICATION Introduction  UWOC provides high data rate communication compared to acoustic and RF underwater  Attenuation due to absorption and scattering depends on wavelength  Turbulence caused by changes in salinity, temperature, air bubbles System Model  450 nm wavelength laser transmitter with 3 mW power  Intensity modulation used to modulate laser beam  Photodetector and power meter at receiver Mathematical Channel Modeling  Beer-Lambert law models power loss versus distance  Attenuation coefficient higher for saline water than tap water  Beam divergence effects important for longer distances Simulation  450 nm wavelength laser with 30 mW and 200 mW power  10 Mbps to 1 Gbps data rate  BER and Q-factor analyzed Results  For tap water: 18 m link at 10 Mbps with 30 mW laser  Higher power laser gives longer range  Saline water has much shorter range due to high attenuation  Link length reduces for higher data rates In summary, mathematical modeling and simulation results show UWOC offers high data rate communication but distance is limited, especially for saline water. Laser power and data rate are key parameters determining maximum transmission range.
