Cambodia is a country that was once led by the Khmer Rouge with Pol Pot as the largest communist party in the region. The Khmer Rouge was a communist political party in Cambodia led by Pol Pot. Pol Pot together with the Khmer Rouge carried out a coup against Lol Nol who became leader replacing Norodom Sihanouk. Pol Pot became Prime Minister of Cambodia when there was a ceasefire in Vietnam between Main Vietnam and South Vietnam. North Vietnam led by the Soviet Union and China as communism and South Vietnam led by the United States as Liberals. The regions of Cambodia and Laos are areas that are very close to the Vietnam conflict area. This made communism use Cambodia and Laos as a place to attack South Vietnam. Pol Pot himself was a communist figure who really admired Mao Zedong's communism which led China. The spirit of communism in Cambodia is still very strong, especially since they directly border Vietnam, which is the largest communist base in Southeast Asia. Cambodia is also a country that has very low education and technological development compared to other nations. This is because Cambodia tends to close itself off from the nations of Southeast Asia. 3. Explain the profile of the Philippines The Philippines is a country in Southeast Asia. This country borders Taiwan to the north, to the west the South China Sea, to the east the Philippine Sea and the Pacific Ocean, and to the south the Sulawesi Sea. Historically, the Philippines was a Spanish colony, in 1521, starting with the arrival of Ferdinand Magellan, then colonized by England in 1762, and America in 1898. Because of this, the Filipino people have official languages, namely Tagalog, English and Spanish. The majority of the Filipino population is Catholic, and other minorities include Muslims, Buddhists, and Protestant Christians. The Philippines has several tribes, including: a) The Indian tribe is descended from the original Astronesians. b) The Negrito tribe is the original descendants of the Negro. c) The Moro tribe is an indigenous ethnic group that embraces Islam. d) The original inhabitants were the Aeta tribe. However, most of the Filipino population is the result of a mixture of races and ethnicities, namely Mestizo, Sangley, Tornatras, Insulares, Americano, Blanco, and Peninsulares. Therefore, the Philippines is a country that has the strongest western cultural influence. This influence was due to intermarriage between various ethnic groups with the Spanish, British and American colonialists. So, why are most Filipinos of Spanish descent because the Philippines was once colonized by Spain which caused many Spaniards to marry Filipinos. 4. Explain the Human Development Index (HDI) The Human Development Index (HDI) is a measurement by comparing life expectancy, literacy, education and living standards. HDI can explain how residents can access development results in terms of income, education, health, and so on. HDI is used to clarify whether a country can be said to be a developed, developing or underdeveloped country. Apart from that, HDI is also used to measure the influence of economic policy on the quality of life. There are several indicators that form the background for calculating the HDI (Human Development Index), namely: 1) Health Health indicators are measured by life expectancy at birth. The life expectancy and birth rate variables include: • Infant mortality rate and population not expected to reach the age of 40. Percentage of population who have health complaints • Percentage of population who have "morbidity" • Percentage of population who have self-medicated • Percentage of births that received assistance from medical personnel • Percentage of toddlers who are malnourished • Percentage of households that have access to a source of clean drinking water • Percentage of households whose houses have dirt floors • A percentage of the population does not have access to health facilities • Percentage of households do not have access to sanitation • Average duration of illness 2) Education In education, indicators are measured through: • Literacy rate • Average length of schooling • School enrollment rates • School dropout rate • School expectation figures. 3) Decent living standard or income In decent living standards, indicators are measured through: • Number of people working • Number of open unemployed • Number and percentage of poor people real GDP per capita 5. Explain what countries make up the ASEAN organization ASEAN is an abbreviation of Association of South East Asian Nations). ASEAN was founded on August 8 1967 in Bangkok, Thailand. ASEAN is an organization consisting of countries in Southeast Asia. ASEAN was founded by five countries, namely: 1) Indonesia 2) Malaysia 3) Philippines 4) Singapore 5) Thailand The background to the formation of ASEAN is as follows • The existence of common interests and problems among Southeast Asian countries and a belief in the need for efforts to further strengthen ties of regional solidarity and cooperation. • The desire to establish a firm basis for joint activities to enhance regional cooperation in Southeast Asia based on a spirit of equality and friendship and so forth. ASEAN, seen from its geographical location, is located between two oceans, namely the Indian and the Pacific. ASEAN is also located between two continents, namely Asia and Australia. ASEAN countries have four characteristics, namely: • Compact: shaped almost like a circle. An example is Cambodia. • Fragmented: in the form of separate islands. An example is Indonesia. • Elongated: elongated in shape. An example is Vietnam. • Protruded: the shape is more complex and varied, usually has elongated arms. Examples are Thailand and Myanmar. Based on the explanation above, the founders of the ASEAN organization are Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand and Singapore.
