Working Title: The Breakfast Club and Gender Film: The Breakfast Club Aspect working within: Gender, how gender is embedded in the educational and family institutions of society (Risman/Althusser) Ideological State Apparatuses Working Thesis: Through each character in The Breakfast Club, we see the ways in which gender is embedded into society through educational and family institutions. Outline: Main Point 1: Hegemonic masculinity is maintained as the norm for Andrew and John’s characters through their homosocial male interactions at school and at home. Supporting Scenes: Andrew bullies a kid in the locker room and says he did it to make his dad proud. Vernon establishes power and control by intimidating John in a way that enforces hegemonic masculinity. Main Point 2: Female gender norms are enforced by Claire’s friends and others at school. Supporting Scenes: Pressure for Claire to be popular, look good, and try to fit in with her friends. Main Point 3: Interactions between men and women in educational institutions enforce gender norms. Supporting Scenes: View of women as either prudes or sluts, while the men keep photos of all the girls they have been with as trophies, like John. John sexually intimidates Claire, make fun of her, and sexually objectifies her showing hegemonic masculinity.
