Mother to Son outline Introduction ● In the poem “mother to Son” by Langston Hughes uses dialect and imagery to show the theme, which is about determination and challenges. Body ● ● ● Body ● ● ● Body ● ● ● The first example in the poem that shows the theme is ○ “Life for me ain’t been no crystal stair” This example proves how developed the theme is by telling the readers the mother says life is full of test, challenges, and confusion. Throughout this poem, she instructs her son to continue his struggle with patience, resilience, and hope by giving her own life examples. Another example in the poem that shows the theme is ○ “And places with carpet on the floor..” This example proves how developed the theme is by the mom explaining no matter what you’re going through there isn’t going to be any comfort. This part of poem illustrates how sometimes life can be discomfort and too heavy, but no one should give up. The final example from the poem explains the theme is ○ “Don’t you set down on the steps, ‘Cause you finds it’s kinder hard..” This proves the theme of the story because it’s telling the reader a person should confront with courage and determination. Langston was skillfully employed with using literary devices, such as imagery, to express the sentiments of a mother and the reality of life Conclusion ● In conclusion, the poem “Mother to Son” by Langston Hughes is about a mother giving life-like advice to her son. It explains how life can be too hard but you cannot give up. Hughes uses dialect and imagery to demonstrate the theme of the poem, which is determination and challenges. He gives the thoughts of the mother fulfill the poem with her vivid experience in life. Despite the obstacles, she moved on with life, and encourages her son to do the same. What enhances the readers is the undaunted struggle of a mother during her tough time in life.
