PURPOSE OF MEDICATION
Expected Pharmacological Action
Tobramycin inhibits bacterial protein
synthesis by binding to the 30s ribosomal
subunit, leading to cell death.
Therapeutic Use
Treatment of pulmonary infections in cystic
fibrosis; serious Gram-negative bacterial
infections.
Complications
Nephrotoxicity, ototoxicity, neuromuscular blockade,
hypersensitivity reactions, superinfections.
Medication Administration
-Nebulizer twice daily for 28
days on, then 28 days off
-Dose based on weight and
renal function; infused over
30-60 minutes
Contraindications/Precautions
-Renal impairment
-Pre-existing hearing loss
-Neuromuscular disorders
-Pregnancy

-Monitor Peak/trough levels
