Scene 1 In scene 1 there is a man who is running late to work, he hurries out of his house and starts to drive his motorcycle, he then almost runs into a women and crashes his bike And is taken to the hospital Running in a swamp from the aztecs hunting him, then stopping, catching his breath and finding out what to do next 1 thing that they have in common is that they are in a hurry to get somewhere Scene 2 He wakes up tired and thirsty. He then gets poked with a needle to eat food before passing out again. He continues running but is off the trail he was originally on. He stops for a break and feels a pain, he grips onto gis dagger because he feels stressed.as he thinks he is safe they capture him. They both took a break because they had felt a pain in their body, which correlates to having his leg and chest hurt. Scene 3 He wakes up hearing voices talking. He drinks a bottle of water and drinks it. He also notices a cast on his arm. The monteca wakes up tied up and lying on the ground being held down to the ground by ropes. He can hear people chanting They are both being held up, and bound to something. Scene 4 He woke up again, started looking around, but couldn't keep awake, so he fell back asleep The monteca is being dragged out to be sacrificed, he tries to wake up but isn’t able to. When trying to stay awake the motorcycle guy saw a bright light through the window, and the monteca could see bright shining stars 2. Why do you believe the author told this story using parallel plots? Give at least two fully explained reasons. The author used parallel plots because he wants to confuse the reader, making everything seem almost exactly the same between the dream and reality. Another reason is to give the reader suspense, everytime something might happen the motorcycle wakes up. Everytime something happens to the motorcycle guy, the other character wakes up. 3. In both plots, the author frequently refers to smells. Explain how the descriptions of smells differ in each plot. How do these differences affect the tone of each plot? The difference between the smells is in plot 1, the narrator describes the smell as a reek in the hospital, “But the reek lifted”, in plot 2, the character talks about how it smells like war, these differences affect the tone because in plot 1 it doesn't really describe the smell but in plot 2 it describes the smells in detail. 4. How does your perception of the protagonist change throughout the story? Cite text evidence to support your ideas. The perception of the protagonist is worrying at first but, lead to confusion due the shifts in reality due to his dreams, “he thought that probably he was going to be late, and hurried onto the motorcycle” it began as a man being late, then “under which he moved, in flight from the Aztecs.” being chased by Aztcs through the woods 5. The story is told through the limited view of the protagonist. How might an omniscient narrator relate the experiences of other characters? How would knowing their thoughts affect the story? Omniscient narrator relates to the experience of other characters with their thoughts and feelings. Knowing these thoughts affects the story because characters are seeing protagonists during the exiting of his dreams. 6. Identify two moments in “The Night Face Up” when the main character has a realization. What do these Aha Moments suggest about the man’s changing state of the mind and how clearly he is thinking? Both times were the main characters on trails, the moment he realizes something different along this trail, “It was unusual as a dream because it was full of smells, and he never dreamt smells”, another realization that monteca is where he started to think which reality was actually true, being confused with things like smelling in dreams and remember certain paths really made him struggle with what is reality. 7. Do you believe the realization the protagonists comes to at the end of the story? Why or why not? Use specific details from the text to support your belief. I do believe that the protagonists realization comes at the end of the story, this is because, “it was unusual as a dream because it was full of smells, and he never dreamt smells'', began with smelling things in his dreams, it ends with, “with a last hope he shut his lids tightly moaning to wake up, for a second he thought he had gotten there, because once more he was imobile in the bed,” when he tried to retire he couldn't. This is why he smelt things in a “dream” because in the end it was reality.
