CREATIVE WRITING- JESSICA LAL CASE
That night still feels unreal whenever I read about it like something that shouldn’t have happened, something that feels
so stupid yet so heartbreaking. The Jessica Lal case always hits me because it wasn’t some complicated crime or some
big mastermind plan. It was literally just a normal girl working at a party, doing her job, and someone’s ego couldn’t
take one simple “no.”So the story is that at a late-night Delhi party, everything fancy , loud music, people drunk, and
Jessica standing behind the bar doing her job. The drinks are over, the party is basically ending. And there is this guy
name Manu Sharma who walks up, acting like the world revolves around him. He asks for a drink. She refuses to give
the drinks and instead of taking a “no” like any normal human being, he took out a gun. He pulled the trigger and the
jesscia’s life ended there.
The next part of the story was not easy to read. The case went to court, but it felt like the truth was slowly disappearing.
Witnesses who first spoke clearly suddenly changed their statements. Some said they “saw nothing.” Evidence went
missing. It looked like money and power were winning. The first judgment came, and Manu Sharma was declared “not
guilty.” The whole country was shocked. It felt unfair and honestly painful like justice had been pushed aside. But one
person did not give up Sabrina Lal that is Jessica’s sister. She became the strength of the case. She was neither loud nor
dramatic she was calm and steady. She believed that her sister deserved justice, and she fought for it everyday. This is
the part of the case that inspires me the most. When the system looked weak, Sabrina remained strong.
The media also played a major role. TV channels and newspapers focused on the truth. They showed the flaws in the
investigation, highlighted the missing evidence, and questioned why justice wasn’t happening. People all over the
country began to talk about Jessica. India didn’t stay quiet. People actually stood up. They did Candle marches, angry
debates, Jessica’s sister fighting like hell, citizens refusing to accept such nonsense. The case was reopened. This time
things changed. With stronger evidence, clearer testimonies, and the entire country watching, the court finally gave the
right judgment. Manu Sharma was convicted and sent to prison for life.
What makes this case so interesting to me is how one simple situation where a girl refusing to serve drink because the
bar was closed became a major fight for justice. It shows how unfair the system can be, but also how powerful people
can be when they refuse to stay silent. In the end, what stays with me is not just the crime, but the fight that followed. It
shows how one person’s ego can destroy a life, but also how a whole country can come together to fix what’s broken.
The Jessica Lal case reminds me that justice may be slow, messy, and frustrating, but it’s not impossible. Sometimes it
needs people who refuse to stay quiet, people like Sabrina, and citizens who choose truth over fear. That’s why this
case is remembered even today because it proves that in the end the truth doesn’t fully disappear.
