Mathematics: Complex Numbers- Modulus Note: You are suggested to read the last lesson “Introduction to Complex Number’s” to make the most out of this lesson. Here, we’re going to talk about the modulus of a complex number. Remember how I ended the last lesson emphasizing that the “line” from the origin to the complex point is important? It’s important mainly because this line is actually the “modulus” of the complex number, which is basically its magnitude. Let’s take the Argand Diagram from the last lesson to calculate the modulus of. If you look at the diagram above, what does it remind you of? It reminds me of a Pythagorean triangle, with a=5, b=6, and “c”, which we call the modulus, is what we want to find. Let’s first recap the Pythagorean Theorem a2+b2=c2 From the complex number y=5+6i, we learn that a=5 and b=6. So we can now use Pythagoras to solve for “c”, the modulus of the complex number. 52+62= c2 c2=61 c=√61
