Percent Composition Lab – Oreos Introduction: The percent composition of a substance is the percent of each element in the substance. This can be used to determine the chemical formula of a substance, and help us identify unknown chemicals! Today, we will look at the percent of percent of cream filling in both regular and double stuffed Oreos! Purpose: The purpose of this lab is to determine if double stuff oreos actually have double filling. Hypothesis: The double oreo stuff has double filling. Materials:  1 regular Oreo  1 double stuffed Oreo  1 plastic knife  electronic balance  calculator Procedure Part 1: OREOS 1. Measure the mass of the regular Oreo. Record on the data table. 2. Measure the mass of the double stuffed Oreo. Record on the data table. 3. Take the regular Oreo apart. Scrape as much of the cream off as possible with the plastic knife. Measure the mass and record it on the data table. 4. Calculate the percent of frosting using the following equation: Percent frosting = mass of cream Total Oreo Mass X 100 5. Repeat steps 3-4 with the double stuffed Oreo. 6. Based in percentage, determine if the double stuff indeed has double the amount of cream as the original Oreo. Data Tables Regular Oreo Double Stuffed Oreo Mass of Regular Oreo 0.38 oz Mass of Double Stuffed Oreo 0.52 oz Mass of cream only 0.14 oz Mass of cream only 0.28 oz Percent of cream (show calculations below) 36.84% Percent of cream (show calculations below) 53.85% Calculations: SHOW WORK! Regular Oreos 0.14 oz x 100 0.38 oz = 36.84% Double Stuff Oreos 0.28 oz x 100 0.52 oz = 53.85% Conclusion: (Restate the purpose, discuss your hypothesis and data, explain what you learned from the data, and possible errors) The purpose of this experiment is to determine if double stuff oreos have actually double filling. The double oreo has actually double filling because we can see the amount of the filling in the oreo that it is really doubled compare to regular oreos. The mass of the cream only reveals that the cream is doubled from 0.14 oz to 0.28 oz. Therefore, the hypothesis is true. I learned that the mass of the cream is doubled compare to regular oreos. The possible errors is the remaining cream on the cookies because there are cream that really sticks with cookies.
