Properties of Water Lab Report Instructions: Choose a property of water and design an experiment to test the property. Use the following lab template to ensure all lab report components are included. Title: How does adding salt affect the time the water freezes? Objective(s): Using the freezing time, I want to know the different freezing time in pure and salt water. Hypothesis: If salt can melt ice than saltwater would take longer to freeze Variables: Independent Variable: the salt used Dependent Variable: the freezing point Controlled Variable: the amount of water, amount of salt, water, and the temperature. Materials: - Two cups Iodized Salt Freezer Water Procedure: First, I put half cup of water into each the same plastic cups. Second, I put 1 tsp of iodized salt into one of the cups than placed both cups into the freezer at 0 degrees Fahrenheit. I then recorded the time till one of them froze. Data and Observations: An hour and 18 minutes later the top of the water is frozen and the cup with salt has the same constancy of a slushy. An hour later after I lasted checked the water without salt has created an ice bubble around the water. The morning after the water without salt has completely froze but the cup with salt has not completely frozen. Conclusion: My hypothesis was correct I stated the cup with salt would take longer to freeze with my reason being that salt melts ice. my results that I got from doing this experiment was the water with salt would freeze slower than pure water. if I were to do this experiment again I would use different type of salt to see if different type of salt would freeze faster or slower than the iodized salt I used for this experiment. Questions: 1. Analyze the property of water you investigated and provide some real-world applications of the importance of this property of water. In places that snow they use salt machines to pour salt onto icy roads.
