Criteria for Selecting AntiBias Children’s Books Illustrations- Are their harmful stereotypes, Tokenism, or Invisibility? Story Line & Relationships Between People- Do characters with disabilities appear week or unnecessary? Messages About Different Lifestyles- Is there any signs of discrimination between Does this Children’s Book meet the criteria? How or Why Not? There are many stereotypes that are harmful in this book. Frist the book does discriminate against the female child. This book only talks about boy children who want to work on trains like their fathers. The book makes no mention of a female child wanting to be like her father working on trains. This is very harmful to the children who will reads this book because the message they will get from this book is that you can only work on train if you are a male. When I looked at this book, they are a group of people who are often not mentioned or recognized in children’s books which in this book was the mother. The book does talk about the child’s great-greatgrandmother, I also, did find that the author was being bias when he talked about how the child’s great-grandmother was doing unusual job that was meant for men. The other thing that I noticed was biased about this book was the lifestyle of which was only White men and few white women worked on trains. This book lacked diversity of any adults of different color or ethnicity working on the trains. The story line in this book does not talk about characters with disabilities. The focus of the story in this book is how boys follow their father’s footsteps. The summary of this book is the train traveling into history making stops in time to learn about the progress travel by train. The book starts with a boy’s description of his father’s job who is a locomotive engineer. The boy can see how his ancestors all worked for the railroads starting from his grandfather to his great-grandfather, and great-great grandmother. Yes, this story book has a message about different lifestyles, and they is signs of discrimination between characters. This story has no messages regarding different lifestyles. The book Characters? is biased the lifestyle of which was only White men and few white women worked on trains. This book lacked diversity of any adults of different color or ethnicity working on the trains. I do believe that this book can affect the child in the negative why because the characters that are represented in this book are mostly White men working on the railroads, for example when the child look at this book, they are not going to see diversity of other races when on trains. The book also does discriminate against women when the author referred to the great-grandmother of the child has doing a man’s work because she was working on trains. Effects on Children’s Self This story book will affect the children’s self and social identities in the negative way because the characters that are and Social Identities- Is represented in this book are mostly White men working on the there evidence of social and railroads, for example when the child look at this book, they cultural diversity? are not going to see diversity of other races working on trains. This book does not celebrate cultural diversity. This book shows the child and the father engaging. The book Children and Adults starts with a boy’s description of his father’s job who is a Engaging in Actions For Changelocomotive engineer. The communication between the child and the father in this book the actions are not for change, because of lack of diversity, and gender discrimination against the female child. The author’s perspective is to write about science fiction pictures children’s books. His attitude appears to teach children about the history of trains and other things back in time. The only thing that the book like is the lack of diversity. This book appear to have loaded words about gender role. Loaded Words- sexist When the author the referred to the boy’s great-grandmother language, racist messages… etc. has doing a man’s job because she was working on trains. The copyright of this book date is 2000. The book is relevant Copyright Date- Is it current and relevant to for the children of today because they will learn about the history of trains. Also, this this book does not reflect the children today? reality because it lacks diversity of people who worked on trains. (Derman-Sparks, 2013). Appeal of Story & The appeal of this story for children is not on spot because Illustrations to Young the author does not include all the children from different Childrenraces/cultural in this book. The focus of the story is for a male child to follow they father’s footsteps. It does not represent other boys from other cultures, and the female child will not be interested in this book because they do not see themselves. The book I choose above does fall on cultural competence continuum under cultural indifference. The reason this falls under cultural competence continuum is that it does not include so many things that are not acceptable. First this books does not include women it only talks about men working on trains. When talking about the boy’s great-mother working on the trains the author stated that she was doing a man’s job. And it only talks about one race being the only ones who worked at the train station. For instance, when a girl child read this book, they will think just because they are girls they are not qualified to work at the railroad because it is a man’s job. The other reason this book falls under cultural competence continuum is because it only states one group being dominant which in this case it is White men. The author should have included other races in this book as people who worked on the trains. History shows that it was African American Slaves who were working on the trains in the beginning. This book also helped to see my own biases. Whenever I was reading this book, I was not always paying attention to things like other races that are included in a book. I always feel like it is normal for instance when I am reading a book about basketball and the only characters that are dominated are African Americans, playing basketball. But doing this week’s assignment have helped to see my own biases, and I will be very careful when choosing books for my students. In order for the teacher to discuss or talk about student’s performance they need to use Culturally responsive teaching (CRT). When it comes to teaching students, educators need to bring more academic benefits that promotes student’s culturally diverse backgrounds (Hoffman, 2018). The other thing that is vital is communication between students and their teacher. The teachers can be able to use or implement cooperative learning, they can also allow students to tutor each other in the classroom. By allowing students to tutor each other this will help them to be successful with the academic achievement.
