Although she is not moving, she has potential energy because of her position at the top of the hill. ln the second position, the skier is moving down the hill. When the skier comes to а stop at the bottom of the hill, she по longer has kinetic energy. Energy Transformations Like matter, energy сап Ье transformed, or changed, from one form to another. For example, when you flip а switch to turn оп а lamp, the lamp wire carries electrical energy to the lightbulb. lnside the bulb, the electrical energy moves through а thin wire called а filament. The filament gets so hot that it glows. Electrical energy is changed into electromagnetic energy-the light that you see. Some of the electrical energy is also changed into heat. Energy transformations are part of your daily life. The energy in fuels is also stored chemical energy. This energy is released when the fuels are burned. The Law of Conservation of Energy The previous examples show that energy transformations сап take many forms. However, по matter how energy is transformed, energy itself is neither made nor destroyed. This principle forms the basis of ап important scientific law. The law of conservation of energy states that although energy may change from опе form to another, energy is neither created nor destroyed. Air resistance is а form of friction that opposes the motion of ап object moving through air.
