* Read page 365- “The Industrial Revolution”
1. In your own words, what were the changes that were happening which led to an Industrial Revolution in
Britain? Factory machines are taking the place of hand tools. Mass production is occurring as
many thousands of goods are being pumped out of factories.

2. Look at how the textbook describes the factory system. What would be the pros and cons of this way of
working?

3. What were three unique facts about the Lowell Mills? Women worked in these factories, they
earned high wages at one point, they lived in boardinghouses owned by company.

4. What were interchangeable parts?
Why were they so valuable?
Parts that are alike which can be swapped out of similar products. They were valuable because
they saved time and effort. A new part for a rifle would not have to be uniquely made just because
it broke.

5. Why were the changes in transportation (with the steam boat and the railroad) so important? Why
were the changes in communication (with the telegraph) so important? Transportation- Allowed
faster, more efficient travel to occur. Large quantities of goods could be shipped.
Communication- Much faster communication; news is received more rapidly. The nation was better
connected.

6. The text states the following: New technologies linked regions and contributed to a feeling of national
unity.”
What does this mean? One area of the country was able to help out the other because of
the technology they had (such as textile mills). They grew interdependent on one another.

7. Your textbook mentions that Eli Whitney demonstrated the use of interchangeable parts with muskets.
What are two examples of products today which use interchangeable parts?
Auto parts, bike parts,
computer parts, etc.
8. In what ways has transportation changed in the U.S over the last 20 years or so? We now have
electric cars, light rail in Phoenix, a proposed bullet train between Los Angeles and San Francisco.
More talk about alternative transportation to help the environment.
(turn over) 9. In what ways have methods of communication changed in the U.S. over the last 20 years or so? New
types of cell phones, social media with Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc. Faster way of
communication with texting. People can communicate halfway across the world without ever
leaving their home.
10. What would be the three most positive parts about having an Industrial Revolution? What would be
the three most negative parts about having an Industrial Revolution?
Positive: New products developed to help America, new job opportunities open up, much time
being saved.
Negative: Effect on the environment with pollution, overcrowded cities, stress on families, etc.
