The Road to Revolution: Causes and Effects British Action/Reason Colonist Reaction French And Indian War- England (and its Native American allies) fought against the French (and its Native American allies, plus the Spanish) for control of North America. England wins and gains all the land east of the Mississippi River. Proclamation of 1763Forbid settlement beyond a certain point along the Appalachian Mountains. Colonists are proud the English won and excited to move into the new territory. Some plan on making money buying/selling land to settlers. Supposed to prevent problems between Native Americans and settlers. Colonists were angry because they felt the British were choosing Native American interests over their own. Also because they had hoped to make money off the lands. Quartering ActRequired colonists to pay taxes that would provide housing, food, and drinks for British troops stationed there to enforce British laws. Colonists were fearful the troops would be used to restrict their freedoms. They resented the fact they had to pay for the soldiers stay the colonies. Passed to save the British money. Sugar Act and Stamp ActLevied taxes on sugar and molasses (which impacted the production of rum); legal and commercial documents (like wills, contracts, newspapers, and diplomas). Purpose to raise money to pay for the French and Indian War. Angry because felt Parliament could not tax the colonies without their consent. Colonists protested, boycotted goods. Stamp Act Congress formed; sent petition to the King. Sons of Liberty formed, began taking action. (The acts were repealed after one year.) Townshend ActsBritish places duties on imports (glass, paper, paint, lead, and tea) to raise money. Sent more troops to support it. Passed Writs of Assistance to enforce it. Boston started another boycott and other colonies joined. Daughters of Liberty formed. Threats made against British. (Boston Massacre?) Writs of AssistanceSearch Warrants allowed British to enter homes and businesses to enter homes to search for smuggled or illegal goods (to stop colonists from breaking the laws) Colonists felt it violated their “natural rights” because “no one ought to harm another in his life, health, liberty, or possessions.”
