Amino Acids and Proteins One of the most significant things I learned through this activity was that proteins are one of the three macronutrients essential for good health. Proteins are made of amino acids and support several functions of the body, and are the building blocks of life. According to Dorwart (2025), amino acids serve essential functions, such as tissue repair and the production of enzymes and hormones, while also supporting immune system operations and muscle preservation. I also learned that there are 20 amino acids, nine of which are essential, and the rest are nonessential. Essential amino acids must be consumed through dietary sources since the body cannot synthesize them on its own. We all need proteins to maintain and support life, and the required intake depends on age, activity level, and health status. Protein helps the body to grow, heal, and build and maintain muscle, especially in older people. According to Singh (2023), people who eat sufficient protein experience improved metabolic health and reduced chronic disease risk, including diabetes and heart disease. Excessive protein intake poses risks to kidney health and elevates disease risk when sourced from animal products abundant in saturated fats. Before I completed this activity, I thought that more protein meant more health and bigger muscles. I learned that it is not always the case that the more protein you eat, the better off you are. Protein that surpasses muscle repair and growth needs transforms into energy or accumulates as fat storage.
