I. Nature of Mathematics&Patterns Mathematics – The science of patterns, structures, quantities, and relationships, expressed through logical reasoning and symbolic language. Pattern – A regular, repeated, or predictable form, sequence, or arrangement observed in nature, art, or numbers. Symmetry – A property where a figure or object remains invariant under transformations such as reflection, rotation, or translation. Fibonacci sequence – A number sequence in which each term is the sum of the two preceding terms (0, 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, …), often appearing in natural growth patterns. Golden ratio (φ) – An irrational number approximately equal to 1.618, often associated with aesthetically pleasing proportions in art, architecture, and nature. Fractal – A complex geometric shape that exhibits self-similarity at different scales, often generated by recursive mathematical processes. Tessellation – A pattern of shapes that fit together perfectly without gaps or overlaps, covering a plane continuously. Spiral – A curve that winds around a central point, frequently observed in shells, galaxies, and plant growth. II. Mathematical Language and Symbols Variable – A symbol (usually a letter) that represents an unknown or changeable quantity in mathematical expressions. Expression – A combination of numbers, variables, and operations that represents a value but does not include an equality sign. Equation – A mathematical statement asserting that two expressions are equal. Set – A well-defined collection of distinct objects, called elements or members. Subset – A set whose elements are all contained within another set. Union of sets (A ∪ B) – The set containing all elements that are in A, in B, or in both. Intersection of sets (A ∩ B) – The set containing only the elements common to both A and B. Complement of a set (A′) – The set of all elements in the universal set that are not in A. Venn diagram – A visual representation of sets and their relationships using overlapping circles or regions. Relation – A set of ordered pairs showing a connection between elements of two sets. Function – A special type of relation where each element of the domain is paired with exactly one element of the range. Domain – The set of all possible input values (independent variable) of a function. Range – The set of all possible output values (dependent variable) of a function. Function notation (f(x)) – A symbolic way to denote the output of a function f for a given input x. III. Problem Solving and Reasoning Problem solving – The process of finding solutions to unfamiliar or complex situations using mathematical strategies. Polya’s four-step method – A systematic approach to problem solving: (1) understand the problem, (2) devise a plan, (3) carry out the plan, (4) look back/check. Inductive reasoning – Drawing general conclusions based on specific observations or patterns. Deductive reasoning – Deriving specific conclusions from general principles, definitions, or premises using logic. Conjecture – An unproven statement or hypothesis based on observations, subject to verification or refutation. Counterexample – A specific case that disproves a conjecture or general statement. Heuristic – A practical strategy or rule-of-thumb used to aid problem solving, not guaranteed to be optimal. IV. Data Management (Statistics) Statistics – The branch of mathematics dealing with the collection, organization, analysis, interpretation, and presentation of data. Population – The entire group of individuals or items about which information is desired. Sample – A subset of the population selected for actual data collection and analysis. Parameter – A numerical measure that describes a characteristic of a population. Statistic – A numerical measure that describes a characteristic of a sample. Mean – The arithmetic average of a data set, computed as the sum of all values divided by the number of values. Median – The middle value of a data set when arranged in ascending or descending order. Mode – The value that appears most frequently in a data set. Range – The difference between the largest and smallest values in a data set. Variance – A measure of dispersion representing the average of the squared deviations from the mean. Standard deviation – The square root of the variance; a measure of how spread out data values are around the mean. Percentile – A measure indicating the value below which a given percentage of observations in a group falls. Quartile – Values that divide a ranked data set into four equal parts (Q1, Q2/median, Q3). Z-score – A standardized score indicating how many standard deviations a data point is from the mean. Normal distribution – A symmetric, bell-shaped probability distribution characterized by its mean and standard deviation. Correlation – A statistical measure that describes the strength and direction of a linear relationship between two variables. Regression analysis – A method for modeling the relationship between a dependent variable and one or more independent variables. V. Mathematics of Finance Simple interest – Interest calculated only on the principal amount, using the formula I = Prt. Compound interest – Interest calculated on the principal and on accumulated interest from previous periods. Principal (P) – The initial amount of money invested or borrowed. Rate (r) – The percentage of the principal charged or earned as interest per time period. Time (t) – The duration for which money is invested or borrowed, usually in years. Future value (FV) – The value of an investment or loan at a specified time in the future, including interest. Present value (PV) – The current worth of a future sum of money, discounted at a given interest rate. Annuity – A series of equal payments made at regular intervals. Ordinary annuity – An annuity where payments are made at the end of each period. Annuity due – An annuity where payments are made at the beginning of each period. Amortization – The process of paying off a debt through regular payments that cover both principal and interest over time. Loan – A sum of money borrowed that is expected to be paid back with interest. Mortgage – A loan specifically used to purchase real estate, secured by the property itself. Time value of money – The concept that money available today is worth more than the same amount in the future due to its earning potential. VI. Logic Logic – The study of valid reasoning and argumentation, focusing on the principles of correct inference. Statement (proposition) – A declarative sentence that is either true or false, but not both. Negation (~p) – A statement that is true when the original statement p is false, and vice versa. Conjunction (p ∧ q) – A compound statement that is true only when both component statements are true. Disjunction (p ∨ q) – A compound statement that is true when at least one of the component statements is true. Conditional statement (p → q) – A statement of the form “if p, then q,” false only when p is true and q is false. Biconditional statement (p ↔ q) – A statement that is true when p and q have the same truth value. Truth table – A tabular representation showing all possible truth values of a compound statement based on its components. Tautology – A compound statement that is always true, regardless of the truth values of its components. Contradiction – A compound statement that is always false, regardless of the truth values of its components. Logical equivalence – When two statements have identical truth values in all possible scenarios. Converse – The statement formed by interchanging the hypothesis and conclusion of a conditional (q → p). Inverse – The statement formed by negating both the hypothesis and conclusion of a conditional (~p → ~q). Contrapositive – The statement formed by interchanging and negating the hypothesis and conclusion of a conditional (~q → ~p). Quantifier – Words like “all,”“some,”or “none”that specify the quantity of elements being referred to in a statement. Universal quantifier (∀) – Indicates that a statement applies to all elements in a domain (“for all”). Existential quantifier (∃) – Indicates that there exists at least one element in a domain for which a statement is true (“there exists”). Valid argument – An argument where, if the premises are true, the conclusion must necessarily be true. VII. Geometry and Design Transformation – An operation that moves or changes a geometric figure in some way (e.g., translation, rotation, reflection). Translation – A transformation that slides a figure a certain distance in a given direction without changing its orientation. Rotation – A transformation that turns a figure around a fixed point (center of rotation) by a given angle. Reflection – A transformation that flips a figure over a line (line of reflection), producing a mirror image. Dilation – A transformation that enlarges or reduces a figure by a scale factor relative to a center point. Isometry – A transformation that preserves distances and angles (e.g., translation, rotation, reflection). Geometric design – The use of geometric shapes, patterns, and transformations in art, architecture, and cultural motifs. VIII. Apportionment and Voting Theory Apportionment – The process of distributing a fixed number of items (e.g., seats) among groups (e.g., states) based on population or other criteria. Standard divisor – The total population divided by the number of items to be apportioned. Standard quota – The exact share of items a group should receive, calculated as its population divided by the standard divisor. Lower quota – The standard quota rounded down to the nearest whole number. Upper quota – The standard quota rounded up to the nearest whole number. Hamilton method – An apportionment method that assigns each group its lower quota, then distributes remaining items to those with the largest fractional parts. Jefferson method – An apportionment method using a modified divisor and rounding down all quotas. Webster method – An apportionment method using a modified divisor and rounding quotas to the nearest whole number. Voting system – A method for aggreg individual preferences to determine a collective decision or winner. Plurality method – A voting system where the candidate with the most first-place votes wins, even without a majority. Borda count – A voting method where candidates receive points based on their ranking on each ballot; the highest total wins. Pairwise comparison (Condorcet method) – A voting method where each candidate is compared head-to-head with every other candidate. Fairness criteria – Standards used to evaluate voting systems (e.g., majority criterion, Condorcet criterion, monotonicity). IX. Mathematics of Graphs Graph – A mathematical structure consisting of vertices (nodes) connected by edges (lines). Vertex (plural: vertices) – A point or node in a graph representing an entity or location. Edge – A line connecting two vertices in a graph, representing a relationship or connection. Path – A sequence of edges connecting a series of vertices without repeating any edge. Circuit (cycle) – A path that starts and ends at the same vertex. Euler path – A path that traverses every edge of a graph exactly once. Euler circuit – An Euler path that starts and ends at the same vertex; exists if and only if all vertices have even degree. Degree of a vertex – The number of edges incident to a vertex. Weighted graph – A graph in which each edge is assigned a numerical value (weight), often representingdistance or cost. Traveling Salesman Problem (TSP) – The problem of finding the shortest possible route that visits each vertex exactly once and returns to the start. Planar graph – A graph that can be drawn on a plane without any edges crossing. Euler’s formula (for planar graphs) – The relationship V − E + F = 2, where V = vertices, E = edges, F = faces. Graph coloring – Assigning colors to vertices (or regions) such that no two adjacent vertices (or regions) share the same color. X. Mathematical Systems Mathematical system – A set of elements together with one or more operations and rules governing those operations. Binary operation – An operation that combines two elements of a set to produce another element of the same set (e.g., +, ×). Closure property – A property where performing an operation on any two elements of a set results in an element still within the set. Commutative property – A property where the order of operands does not affect the result (a + b = b + a). Associative property – A property where the grouping of operands does not affect the result ((a + b) + c = a + (b + c)). Identity element – An element that, when combined with any element of the set under a given operation, leaves the other element unchanged. Inverse element – For a given element, another element that combines with it to produce the identity element. Modular arithmetic – A system of arithmetic for integers where numbers “wrap around” after reaching a certain value (the modulus). Congruence modulo n – A relation where two integers are congruent modulo n if they have the same remainder when divided by n. Clock arithmetic – A common example of modular arithmetic based on a 12-hour or 24-hour clock cycle.
