Mineral Identification Lab In this lab you will use the physical properties of minerals to identify them. In the first part of the lab you will review the common physical properties used for mineral identification. Next, you will use the physical properties of 6 unknown samples with a set of flowcharts to make the identifications. You will then search for pictures of these minerals as they appear in samples that were collected in Indiana, and also find and record the minerals' chemical formulas. Lab, Part 1: Review From your readings in Chapter 2 of the textbook, write the definition of these physical properties: Luster: Color: Streak: Hardness: Cleavage: Fracture: Specific Gravity (a measure of density): Lab, Part II: Mineral Identification A geologist has six unknown mineral samples that need to be identified. She has already determined some of the physical properties and recorded the results on her worksheets. If you have not already done so, please print these lab documents and familiarize yourself with them: Geologist's Mineral Identification Worksheets Mineral Identification Flowchart 1 Mineral Identification Flowchart 2 Mineral Identification Flowchart 3 To begin your identifications, for each unknown mineral look at the color and luster that the geologist has recorded on the worksheet. Go to Flowchart 1 for minerals with metallic luster. Go to Flowchart 2 for dark-colored minerals. Go to Flowchart 3 for light-colored, nonmetallic minerals. Using the remaining physical properties that the geologist has recorded, go carefully through the flowcharts to identify each mineral, and make sure that your final identification matches the physical properties on the geologist's worksheets. Hints: All of the correct answers are found on these flowcharts. If you do not remember these math symbols, " >" means "greater than", "<" means "less than". If you encounter the part of Flowchart 1 that sends you to "page 60", page "60" is actually Flowchart 2. "Page 60" does not refer to page 60 in our textbook. Record your mineral identifications on the answer sheet at the end of these directions.
