Introduction: Specific gravity G is defined as the ratio of the weight of an equal volume of distilled water at that temperature both weights taken in air. Typical values of specific gravity of natural soils: 𝑑𝑒𝑛𝑠𝑖𝑡𝑦 𝑜𝑓 𝑚𝑎𝑡𝑒𝑟𝑖𝑎𝑙 𝑑𝑒𝑛𝑠𝑖𝑡𝑦 𝑜𝑓 𝑤𝑎𝑡𝑒𝑟 G= Gs = 𝑑𝑟𝑦 𝑤𝑟𝑖𝑔ℎ𝑡 𝑑𝑟𝑦 𝑣𝑜𝑙𝑢𝑚 𝑑𝑒𝑛𝑠𝑖𝑡𝑦 𝑜𝑓 𝑤𝑎𝑡𝑒𝑟 Equipment: 1- Pycnometer; volumetric flask (500-milliliter capacity). 2- Laboratory oven. 3- Dish. 4- Balance scales sensitive to 0.01 gram. 5- Vacuum pump. 6- Distilled water. Procedure: 1. Clean the Pycnometer well and dry it. 2. Carefully fill the Pycnometer with 50 g (w3) of a dry soil sample, add distilled water to fill the Pycnometer, soak the sample for 10 minutes, apply vacuum to the content to remove the entrapped air. 3. Stop the vacuum and carefully remove the vacuum line from Pycnometer. 4. Clean the exterior surface of the Pycnometer with a clean dry cloth .determine the weight of the Pycnometer and contents, w2. 5. Empty the Pycnometer and clean it, then fill it with distilled water only, Clean the exterior surface of the Pycnometer with a clean dry cloth .determine the weight of the Pycnometer and distilled water, w1. 6. Determine the water temperature. 7. Empty the Pycnometer and clean it. Sources of errors: A- Don’t leave the sample in vacuum for (10 to 30) min, after any adding the water on sample in Pycnometer. B- Loss some of sample. C- The temperature in class was 28 ˚c so we multiple Specific Gravity Gs by temperature correction factor. (The temperature must be 20 ˚c).
