A House for Hermit Crab by Eric Carle A House for Hermit Crab is written and illustrated by Eric Carle. Published by Scholastic Inc in New York in 1990. This story could be read by children in the 2nd grade. The story explores the life of one hermit crab named Hermit Crab. He decides that he shell has gotten to small for him and he needs to find a new home. After finding his new shell or home, he decides that it is to plain for him and he needs to decorate it. Hermit Crabs starts asking other sea creatures if they would like to decorate or live on his shell. Within a couple of months Hermit Crab has many new friends living on his shell. At the end of the story Hermit Crab become to small for his shell, so he gives it to a smaller hermit crab. 1. Knowledge: Name one of the sea creature that lived Hermit Crab‘s shell? ­ This question is basic information given in the story. It does not ask the reader to demonstrate any understanding of the story. 2. Comprehension: Explain why Hermit Crab asks different creatures to live on his shell? ­ This question allows the reader to demonstrate their understanding of what is happening in the story. It separates itself from the application question, by not asking the students to apply any previous knowledge to the story. 3. Application: Build your own home for Hermit Crab. Keeping in mind what hermit crabs do and where they live. ­ This activity allows the teacher to see if the students are able to take information given in the story and in past lesson to design their own house for Hermit Crab. It separates itself from the next level by allowing the students to use their schema on hermit crab shells. 4. Analysis: Compare Hermit Crab’s first shell to his second shell? ­ This allows the teacher to determine whether the students see a difference between the different shells by the students breaking down the information given. This is separate from the next level because it does not ask the students to use anything other than information given. 5. Synthesis: How would you improve Hermit Crab’s shell? ­ This allows the reader to design an alternative story line. It does not ask for the students emotional opinion on how to improve the shell; that is what separates it from the evaluation question. 6. Evaluation: Why was it better that Hermit Crab gave up his shell to the smaller hermit crab? ­ This question allows the students to state their own opinion on what happened.
