A Dozen  One Dozen= 12 of something  Examples: 12 eggs, 12 video games, 12 headbands, 12 Wizards of Waverly Place shirts, 12 Hannah Montana CD’s.  So, from now on, if you hear people talking about using a dozen eggs, you know it means 12 of them. A Little Story  One day, Todd and Nolan went to the grocery store. Their job was to get two dozen eggs. There was only one problem. Todd and Nolan were not sure how many eggs it took to make “a dozen.”  Lucky for them, Hunter and Kate were at the grocery store too. Todd asked Hunter if he knew how many eggs were in a dozen. Hunter said, “Yes, of course I do! Remember when Mr. Welcher told us it was 12?” Todd remembered now. He made sure to thank Hunter and Kate for their help.  Question: If 12 eggs equals one dozen, how many eggs would be in “two dozen”  Solve on your whiteboard. Raise up in the air when you are finished.  After Todd and Nolan had figured out how many eggs it took to make two dozen, they were all ready to leave. But just before they were ready to check out, Hailey called Todd on the phone. Hailey said, “Todd, Lauren and I need you to get two dozen more eggs so we can finish making that cake for Mrs. Deweese. Would you be willing to do that?” Todd of course agreed, and he and Nolan went back to get more eggs.  Question: If Todd and Nolan have two dozen eggs and that is 24 eggs, how many eggs would they have if they bought two dozen more?  Answer: 48 eggs  After Todd and Nolan got two dozen more eggs, they were all ready to leave. They thought to themselves, we have 48 eggs here now, that will definitely be enough to get done what we need to. But, right before they got to the check out line, Nolan’s phone rang. This time it was Zeck. Zeck asked Nolan if he could get him a dozen eggs so he could make some cookies for Mr. Welcher. Nolan said that he would be happy to. Nolan told Todd and they went back to the egg aisle.  Question: If Todd and Nolan have four dozen, or 48 eggs, how many would they have if they bought another dozen for Zeck?  Answer: 60 eggs  Todd and Nolan finally were able to check out and leave the grocery store. When they got home, they got out all of their eggs. They remembered that they only needed two dozen.  Question: How many eggs are there in two dozen?  When Todd and Nolan realized they needed two dozen, or 24 eggs, they pushed these to the side and looked at the rest of the eggs. “Hailey and Lauren needed two dozen for Mrs. Deweese’s cake,” Todd thought to himself. “And Zeck needed a dozen for Mr. Welcher’s cookies,” Nolan thought.  Question: If you add the two dozen eggs Hailey and Lauren need for Mrs. Deweese’s cake to the dozen eggs Zeck needs for Mr. Welcher’s cookies, how many eggs would you have?  Answer: 36 eggs  Todd and Nolan delivered the eggs to Hailey, Lauren and Zeck. They were able to complete their cooking in time for the class party on Friday, and the whole class was able to enjoy a wonderful party with cookies and cake!  And this was all possible because each of them knew how many eggs it took to make a dozen!
