Dislocation Motion Plastic deformation corresponds to the motion of a large number of dislocations The atomic arrangement is ordered & perfect before & after the dislocation movement through a particular region of the crystal It's only the region around the edge of the dislocation that disrupts the lattice structure This dislocation migration causes bonds to be broken & can ultimately lead to a step in the crystal - this kind of deformation is plastic deformation & is central to plastic deformation in metal structures Slip System Slip = process by which plastic deformation is produced by dislocation motion Slip planes = close-packed plane with the most dense atomic packing Slip directions = close-packed Dislocations do not move with the same degree of ease on all crystallographic planes of atoms & in all crystallographic directions The preferred planes & directions are called the slip planes & slip directions Combo of slip plane & slip direction is termed the slip system Slip system depends on the crystal structure of the metal & it moves to minimise atomic distortion during dislocation motion
