Week Three: Capital and Labor Late 19th century (1860s-1880s) Industrial Revolution child labor! employers had to cut workers' pay when the railroads lost money after the Civil War The workers demanded higher pay (because they couldn't live on low pay), but their employers didn't want to put down the protests, so they called in law enforcement. So they went on strike. The protests were killed by the militia and the federal troops, and many protestors (BRWH) The strike was crushed six weeks later. The need for labor unions was fully realized after this. As companies grew in size and power & owners gained in affluence, the laborers themselves became less important Taylorism-scientific management in labor (named after Frederick Taylor) -allowed for mass production (machines) -assembly line came into play (made laborers by Henry Ford) competition in the marketplace was starting to kill investments Firms combined instead of competing. → led to the rise of Monopoly w/ large new companies working conditions just shifted, not reliable, jobs w/ long hours & tiring, low-skilled unreliable jobs The Republican Party was pro-labor & pro-business in the early 20th century Charles Darwin published On the Origin of Species in 1859. Herbert Spencer took Darwin's theory of natural selection and applied it to society. Week Five, Day One - Class Notes Native American Graves protection & repatriation act (since 1990) The human remains of any ancestry "must at all times be treated with dignity and respect" (NPS, you) Congress promotes dialogue between museums & Native American Tribes about their own artifacts. graves were dug up to make room for progress The American West - the meeting point between savagery & civilization? pioneerism: being a pioneer is being the first person to do something Gold Rush: 1849-1860. By the Great Horn Spoon! men rushed out west for gold, leaving their families behind. women went out west for money (they'd usually earn it via prostitution). bison extinction men who would shoot buffalo from the trains not to only destroy the buffalo, but also to destroy the Indian way of life Exodusters - the nickname that was given the Black Americans who exited west to escape slavery, racism & white supremacy. they still continued to struggle economically. Transcontinental Railroad (1862) railroad workers set up work camps. women offered services to the male workers.
