When George and Lennie arrive at the bunkhouse they are greeted by Candy. 2. What unusual habits did Whitey have? Whitney has several unusual habits, he hated germs, he is a clean freak, he washes his hands after he eats, he keeps things super clean, peels his potatoes and takes out every little spot before he'd eat them, he scratches off the red splotches on an egg, and he dresses up on Sunday even if he wasn't going anywhere. 3. Whom does the boss "give hell to" when George and Lennie are late? The boss takes his anger out on Crooks, the stable buck who lives in the barn when George and Lennie are late. 4. Why does George answer all the questions directed to Lennie? George answers the questions directed at Lennie because he doesn't want Lennie to say something that could get them fired. Although Lennie is not smart, he is extremely hardworking and George wants the boss to see his work before he sees that Lennie is slow in mind. 5. What excuse does George offer to explain Lennie's slowness? George tells the boss that Lennie was kicked in the head by a horse, and that is why he is slow. 6. What does the boss suspect George is doing to Lennie? Because George does not want Lennie to answer any questions, the boss thinks that George is selling Lennie out by taking his money. 7. How does Curley react to Lennie's silence? Curley becomes angry and annoyed at Lennie’s silence, he thinks Lennie is being disrespectful. Candy states, “ Curley’s like alot of little guys. He hates big guys. He’s alla time picking scraps with big guys. Kind of like he’s mad at ‘em because he ain’t a big guy.” 8. The swamper states, "Curley's pretty handy" (Steinbeck 26). What does he mean by this? When the swamper states, “Curley’s pretty handy” he means he is a decent fighter. 9. How does the swamper describe Slim? The swamper describes Slim when he states “ Slim’s a jerkline skinner. Hell of a nice fella. Slim don’t need to wear no high-heeled boots on a grain team.” 10. What uneasy feeling does George have about Curley's wife? George thinks Curley’s wife is a rattrap and gets an uneasy feeling that she is going to get him and Lennie into trouble. 11. Describe Candy's dog. Candy’s dog is describe as slowly walking at Candy’s heels there walked a dragfooted sheepdog, gray of muzzle, and with pale, blind old eyes. Candy has had the dog since it was a pup and when it was younger it was a good sheepdog.
