The Sound of Silence The song “The Sound of Silence” by Simon and Garfunkel has multiple interpretations from the public. I believe the underlying theme is the negative affects of living in the modern world. For example the first lyric reads, ¨Hello darkness my old friend, I’ve come to talk to you again¨. Paul Simon refers darkness to the state of depression and he is no stranger to experiencing this emotion. In the next few lines, Paul describes vivid visions that are deeply embedded in his mind. Further into the song, Simon claims he witnessed thousands of people talking without purpose. I’m assuming that no one is paying attention to the news and all they worry is about pop culture. “Fools” said I, “You don’t know silence grows like a cancer grows…”. He’s warning these people before matters get worse, as in the silence will consume them and they’ll be solely devoted to worldly things. Lastly, Paul claims to see people worshipping a neon god. There was a flashing sign warning the people that something terrible awaited for them. Around the 1960´s, the vietnam war was occuring and there was little coverage from news outlets. The performance done by Anna Hawkings displays a black and white effect to show the melancholic mood. The blood creeping through the door represents the silence. Two minutes and fifty one seconds in the video, one of the ladies portrayed as society shuts out the media. They included the light as “god” and the lady shoves the light into her body. That shows people consuming the influences of the icon they worship. They’ve created a clear imagery of the song and demonstrated isolation through their perspective.
