One key feature for lit: figurative language notice BUT… How Do I Know It’s Figurative? #1 The building had a blue door. #2 The building had a blue door, as blue as every other door of every other building on the street. #3 The building had a blue door, as blue as every other door of every other building on the street, as blue as the ocean which it faced. #4 The building had a blue door, as blue as every other door of every other building on the street, as blue as the ocean which it faced— the vast blue ocean filled with unseen life, reaching to unknown lands, stirred by unknown forces. #5 The blue door was the color of possibilities. Onomatopoeia Definition- Formation of a word that is derived from sounds. Examples- Boom, pow, bam,splatt Allusion- a figure of speech that indirectly references a person., place, event or work of literature. Example of Allusion: He’s young, he’s scrappy, he’s eager, Hamilton Alliteration Definition: The occurrence of the same letter or sound at the beginning of adjacent or closely connected words. Example: Sally sold seashells by the sea shore Forshadowing Personal Defintion - hinting at what will happen in the future Actual Definiton - Represent, indicate or typify beforehand Example - During a scene in the star wars prequals, the dark side theme plays when Anakin is on the screen even though he’s currently on the light side - foreshadowing that he is moving to the dark side Simile - a figure of speech that compares two unlike things, using the words “like” or “as” 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. As blind as a bat As proud as a peacock As dead as a doornail As gentle as a lamb As good as gold Connotation: What is Connotation: A type of figurative language that has a a secondary meaning to what is originally said. An example of Connotation: “She is feeling blue.” “She wears her heart on her sleeves.” “She has thick skin.” Hyperbole Definition: An extreme exaggeration, not meant to be taken literally. Example(s): “I’m so hungry I could eat a horse!” “I waited forever in traffic!” Personification Definition : - A figure intended to represent an abstract quality; giving human characteristics to something nonhuman. Example : - The sun smiled upon the golden fields. - The trees are dancing in the wind. Metaphor Deﬁnition: Figurative language that compares two different ideas to convey meaning. Example: “She’s got a heart of gold” “I was lost in a sea of nameless faces” OXYMORON Definition : A figure of speech that combines contradictory words with opposing meanings Example: 1. Angel looked “awfully pretty” at lunch today . 2. She told us “old news” . Idiom A phrase that contains a meaning which is not directly derived from the specific words in this phrase. Meaning is typically derived from a cultural understanding. EXAMPLES: Raining cats and dogs (Raining a lot) Break a leg (perform well) Flash back ● interrupts current event to show a memory if the past ● As Kevin was working he started remembering of his life as a chef, and pictured the kitchen he worked in during his time in France.
