Determining the pH of Common Substances You can use pH indicator paper to determine the pH of various solutions. The pH indicator paper changes color when it is exposed to solution. The change in color indicates how acidic or basic the solution is. OBJECTIVE: USE the scientific method PREDICT trends MATERIALS: paper, pencil, pH paper, 4 different solutions, beaker, water PROCEDURE: Step 1. Make a data table with three columns Step 2. Label column one Solution Step 3. Label column two Predicted pH Step 4. Label column three Measured pH Step 5. Predict if each solution has an acid or basic pH and record your predictions in your data table. Step 6. Test each solution with a different pH paper and record the results in the Measured pH column.
