Historical Context Chart
Prompt: To understand your topic, you need to understand the world in which the events related to that topic took place. First, list your research topic and the
revised research question you plan to address moving forward. Then, choose two secondary sources related to your research topic and provide the citation for each
in the chart. You may use secondary sources from previous assignments. Next, explain in the chart what each source tells you about the historical context of a
chosen event and how it relates to your topic. In the last chart column, explain how the context provided by the source will help you write your thesis statement,
answering your research question.
Replace the bracketed text with the relevant information.

This source provides the background about the
transformation of the African National Congress from a
loose collection of groups against apartheid into a political
system. The source details the political journey of de Klerk
and Mandela. De Klerk repealed apartheid laws and
immediately released Mandela from prison to have assist
de Klerk with moving South Africa away from the
apartheid. This source gives historical context by diving
into the problems caused by the sudden dropping of racist
apartheid laws. South African black people were
discriminated against, were not able to take up for
themselves, and were now just given the okay to speak,
live, and love whomever. The ANC and de Klerk did not
know how to usher in a New South Africa and needed
Mandela, who had been a voice of change, to help him
design a post-apartheid South Africa. The context provides
me with a political context.
This context shows much of the side of politics and how
the ANC, de Klerk, and Mandela struggled with the
Transformation of South Africa. With this source detailing
the era of political distress and social distress of the
people, I see a deeper picture and image of the past. This
source will assist me with my thesis on the Apartheid. The
formation of the ANC from small, allied groups into
banding together to make a true political system supports
my thesis by them ushering in Mandela as president to
transform South Africa. The historical context helps me

Mandela and ANC attempted to restore harmony from
those that were mistreated. Historical context is provided
by revealing the laws and their negative effects on Black
and Asian people that were imposed by the minority
leader National Party Regime in 1949. Mandela was a
speaker and role model for change among the antiapartheid movement before and during imprisonment.

help me support my thesis by providing detailed
information about what was going on during that time
with the people. My research question dives into the ways
Mandela helped reform South Africa post-apartheid. The
historical cultural context provides what and why he
needed to reform it. How the people were suffering from
racism even after the laws were repealed and the need for
reconciliation and peace to be placed back into the
country. This historical context provides me with
socioeconomical background that I can use to support my
thesis and research question.
