What were the reasons the bomb should have been used on Japan?
Some of the reasons the bomb should have been used on Japan were to save lives and
to make Japan surrender. President Truman thought that if Japan surrendered, it would save
both Japanese and American lives. So Truman thought the best way to save lives, in the long
run, was to bomb Hiroshima and Nagasaki. This would force Japan to surrender and wouldn’t
have to make America invade Japan on foot. Just under 200,000 Japanese people died
between the two bombings, but because Japan surrendered, it saved over a million combined
Japanese and American lives.
What were the reasons the bomb should not have been used on Japan?
Some of the reasons the bomb should not have been used on Japan were the deaths of
innocent people. The bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki killed people in the war but
also killed a large number of innocent people. The point that Japan had already lost the war
could be argued because the Japanese were already pushed back to the mainland of Japan.
The fact that Japanese people still felt the effects of the bombs after the war had ended through
people dying of radiation sickness and other related illnesses.
Should the atomic bomb have been used on Japan? Why or why not?
I believe that it was the right choice to use the bombs on Japan. This is because Japan
had a mentality where dying in battle was a great honor while surrendering was a disgraceful
act of cowardice. With this mindset, I don’t believe Japan would have surrendered if the US had
not used the bombs. I also believe if we had not used the bombs, many Americans would be
very distrustful of Japan and wanted revenge because of the attack on Pearl Harbor. This paired
with the fact that it saved more lives in the long run I believe it was the right choice.
