The two creative works I have chosen are “The Green Mile”, the film made in 1999, based on the novel by Stephen King, and the art mural by Eduardo Kobra called “Ethnicities” made in 2016. The topic I have chosen for this project is diversity. The subject areas of the humanities for “The Green Mile” film is performing arts, and the mural called “Ethnicities” is part of the visual arts. Describe how the chosen creative works can be used to understand the topic. The mural by Eduardo Kobra called “Ethnicities” can be used to understand diversity because his scaled mural features historical figures and iconic portraits of people from various different cultures, by combining different artistic styles, he creates a kaleidoscopic world that ruminates on the diversity of the human experience. “The Green MIle” film can be used to understand diversity because it provides examples of how diversity can bring societies together and gain a better understanding of why diversity is important and why we should treat others with respect no matter where we are from and no matter what color our skin is. Describe the value of the diverse perspectives demonstrated in the chosen creative works. “The Green Mile” film shows the values of diverse perspectives by showing how different characters each with their own backgrounds and personal experiences and how they react to the same situations and events throughout the film, highlighting the importance of empathy and understanding in complex situations. Different perspectives from the guards, the prisoners, and the warden, encouraging readers to consider experiences of others and foster empathy to understand their perspectives. The mural, “Ethnicities” showcases the values of diverse perspectives by depicting five different individuals from different continents, symbolizing human diversity and interconnectedness, promoting a positive message of unity and highlighting the importance of cultural understanding. Describe potential biases and assumptions present in the creative works in relation to the topic. “The Green MIle” film’s biases and assumptions in relation to diversity are that the film is set in a time in the American south were racism and racial prejudice is prominent, where the color of one’s skin impacts the way they were treated, the justice system influenced John Coffy’s conviction due to him being a bigger black man, film shows how racism was used to justify unfair and harsh punishments and prison sentences. Assumptions include; that a black man could commit such a heinous crime to two young white girls, reflecting racial biases of the American south in the 1930s. The film challenges the assumption that the justice system didn’t ever question the possible innocence of someone already convicted, even when there wasn’t much evidence against the person. Biases and assumptions of the mural by Eduardo Kobra called “Ethnicities” include; Potential stereotyping and the representation of different people, especially if based on stereotypical imagery, could reinforce negative or inaccurate portrayals of different ethnic groups leading to misunderstandings and prejudice. Part Two: Self and Society Describe how the creative works create meaning surrounding the topic. “Ethnicities” creates meaning surrounding diversity because it symbolizes human diversity and interconnectedness, promoting positive messages of unity and highlighting the importance of cultural understanding. “The Green Mile” creates meaning surrounding diversity by exploring it through various means, highlighting racial discrimination through the character of John Coffy, falsely convicted of a crime he didn’t commit, the prejudiced attitudes of characters like William Whaston. Describe how the creative works have impacted society’s perception of the topic. “The Green MIle” has impacted society’s perception of diversity by challenging the audience to reflect on the deeper aspects of humanity, leaving a longlasting impression on its audience, compelling them to contemplate the complexities of the human spirit and the pursuit of righteousness in a flawed world. “Ethnicities” impacts society’s perception on diversity by raising awareness of the importance of diversity and unity, impacting society’s attitudes towards the topic. Describe how the creative works might be perceived by different groups of people Explain how the creative works influence the development of empathy regarding the topic. “The Green Mile” influences the development of empathy through the character John Coffy, and his supernatural ability to heal others, healing their physical or emotional conditions fosters empathy towards others, he just wants others to find peace. “Ethnicities” influences the development of empathy through personal connections and the connection to the humanities encouraging viewers to try to relate to others, promoting understanding and empathy for others. Explain how the creative works encourage critical thinking regarding the topic. “The Green Mile” encourages critical thinking by challenging complex themes, challenging social prejudice, forcing viewers to confront the complexity of justice and morality. The film prompts reflections on p-rejudice, empath, compassion, and the role of justice in society. “Ethnicities” encourages critical thinking prompting critical analysis by viewers, providing visual cues for the viewers to interpret the cultural nuances and engage in the dialogue about diverse perspectives. Part Three: Identity and the Humanities Describe the relationship between the humanities and self-identity. The relationship between the humanities and self-identity is the humanities and it’s subject areas such as literary arts, performing arts, and visual arts, history, philosophy play a significant role in helping to shape our self-identity and concepts, allowing us to understand and interpret human experiences, emotions, behaviors, etc, which help construct our self-identities and self- concepts. Describe sociocultural factors that influence identity construction. The sociocultural factors that influence the construction of our identities are ethnicity, race, religion, and sexuality, shaping an individual’s beliefs, values, behaviors, and attitudes that influence how we perceive ourselves and others around us. Explain how different humanities subject areas can be used to understand one's identity. Explain how diverse perspectives influence self-concept. The diverse perspectives influence our self-concepts by expanding our understanding, challenging biases, and fostering empathy. Cultural influences influence self-concept because various different cultures have different norms, beliefs, and values that help shape one’s self-concept. Social influences can influence our self-concept by providing positive feedback and enhance our confidence, self-esteem, and self-courage, while negative feedback can do the opposite.
