Rhetoric in “How to Tame a Wild Tongue” 1) The rhetor appeals to invented ethos by Gloria Anzualda, the author, establishing her knowledge by mentioning her biography. Throughout the text, she mentions different languages and variations of language- these languages which she speaks. She shows her credibility by speaking the language(s) she is writing about. She also does this by using the word "we" when speaking about Los Chicanos. 2) The rhetor appeals to pathos throughout the section called "linguistic terrorism." Anzualda makes the readers feel empathetic for Chicanas when writing about them, she does this by stating "repeated attacks on our native tongue diminish our sense of self. The attacks continue throughout our lives." Anzualda continues this by using the word "oppress" when speaking about Chicanos relationships with one-and-others. Later in the text, she creates a happier tone by celebrating Chicanos acquiring an official name and language (Chicano Spanish.) 3) Anzualda appeals to logos by stating facts. She mentions how as a culture they call themselves Spanish, which doesn't account for their genes which are 70-80% Indian. She also uses logos when identifying the different types of music in her culture, such as Tex-Mex and conjuntos. 4) Anzualda appeals to Kairos at the end of the text. She states, "but more than we count the blows, we count the days, the weeks, the years, the centuries, the eons until the white laws and commerce and customs will rot in the deserts they've created, lie bleached." That sentence creates quite the urgency in protecting Chicano Spanish.
