Pollination and seed generation are made possible by the pollinator's accidental transfer of pollen to other flowers' stigmas as it travels from blossom to bloom. Another important pathway for gene flow is the migration of animals, including humans. When animals migrate, they may bring genetic material with them that is absorbed into new populations in other geographic areas. For example, creating wildlife corridors can reunite divided ecosystems, enabling unrestricted animal movement and encouraging genetic exchange. Gene flow has a significant influence on evolutionary processes. It prevents populations from diverging too much and retains a degree of genetic coherence among populations by acting as a counterweight to genetic drift and natural selection. Genetic diversity loss and allele fixation can result via genetic drift, which is the random variation of allele frequencies in small populations. To prevent genetic drift and preserve genetic variety, new alleles can be introduced into the population through gene flow.
