ASIA IN ANCIENT TIMES HIST 1301 | History The Gupta Dynasty Northern India was dominated by an empire from the fourth to the seventh century CE, which was established by the Gupta dynasty (320–600 CE). The founder, Chandragupta, was an emulator of the Mauryans and its renowned founder, Chandragupta Maurya, as evidenced by the name he adopted. In order to foster education and the arts, he employed Sanskritspeaking scribes. During this time, Sanskrit developed into the foundation of classical literature that impacted generations of Indians as well as people around the world. Books like the Ramayana and Mahabharata exalted virtues like bravery, responsibility, and carrying out one's social obligations. The first was an exciting anthology of poetry about rivalling dynasties and kings, while the second told the grand story of a warrior prince's quest to regain his honour. In the Ramayana, the Hindu god Vishnu's incarnation Rama defeats the evil Ravana on the island of Sri Lanka, saves his wife Sita, and then proceeds to establish an ideal Indian civilization from his capital city of Ayudha. His heroic deeds were perpetuated for centuries in innumerable paintings, sculptures, carnivals, plays, and shadow theatres, and his great attributes and perfect society served as role models for Hindus aspiring to be emperors and aristocrats. The Sanskrit masterpieces Ramayana and Mahabharata quickly became well known across Southeast Asia, where they influenced the cultural norms of a large number of non-Indian people as well. Several other Gupta-era scholars demonstrated their mathematical prowess by employing decimals and a symbol to represent the idea of zero in accurate measurements and documentation. Among the most famous was the astronomer Brahmagupta, who invented the concept of negative numbers and the operations of multiplication and division in the seventh century CE. The Gupta family was innovative in politics as well. As a reward for their allegiance, kings gave large areas of land as gifts to wealthy families, Brahmans, and temple complexes, ensuring these adherents received a portion of the crop and strengthening their own authority. In exchange, in ceremonies dedicated to Vishnu and Shiva, the Brahmans raised the Gupta emperors to unprecedented heights. However, as these gods gained in importance, regular people's worship grew more intimate and private; singing became a popular form of devotion, and household rituals were vital to day-to-day existence. The sanctity of bhakti, or the intimate, direct link between a believer and the divine, gained popularity among Indians. Though it irritated the Brahmans by eschewing their duty as middlemen, this notion gained traction in southern India, where Tamil poetry provided the basis for the newly adopted Hindu practice of personalised devotion. During the Gupta era, Buddhism reached its pinnacle in India and artistic and religious expression flourished. The exquisite sculptures and painted caverns of the Ajanta caves demonstrate the artistic prowess of the dynasty's patrons. Buddhist institutions like Nalanda were among the earliest in the ancient world and drew hordes of students and pilgrims from China, even though Hinduism remained the official religion of the empire and the Guptas. Among the most intelligent and erudite people in antiquity, the educated classes of India occasionally diverged from morals and mathematics to delve into the depths of sensuality, passion, and love. A treatise on courting and sexuality, the Kama Sutra, was written at this time and went on to become a classic work of Indian literature, inspiring and titillating generations of people ever since. The Guptas' grandeur and security evaporated when the Huns, a northern invasion force, became a real danger. After this, commerce and relations between southern India and South Asia developed, while northern India broke up into smaller states. By the eleventh century, significant southern kingdoms like the Tamil Chola dynasty had emerged as a result of the region's lucrative exports of commodities including peacocks, pepper, spices, ivory, and Roman coinage. However, Buddhism, Hinduism, and the art and knowledge they each inspired were India's most important exports to the rest of South Asia, and they survived far longer than these nations.
