ASIA IN ANCIENT TIMES HIST 1301 | History The Mauryan Empire The establishment of the Mauryan Empire (326–184 BCE) served as the initial impetus for the spread of Buddhism throughout Asia. After Chandragupta Maurya, the ruler of the tiny Indian kingdom of Magahda, succeeded in uniting most of northern India from a capital close to Patna and passing it on to his successors, creating the Maurya dynasty, this entity emerged out of that smaller country. Around the end of the fourth century BCE, a Greek historian by the name of Megasthenes travelled to the centre of Chandragupta's dominion and marvelled at its palaces, which had bathing pools, gardens with lots of jasmine, hibiscus, and lilies, and grottoes. In a series of military battles, Chandragupta's successors subjugated all of the subcontinent, with the exception of the southern tip, and ruled over a populace approaching fifty million. The governmental organisation of the Mauryan Empire included a sizable and well-trained army under the command of a war office with divisions for a fleet and the training of horses and elephants for cavalry combat. The ministries were managed by a civilian bureaucracy that was in charge of planning irrigation systems, building roads, and collecting taxes in addition to managing sectors like mining, shipbuilding, and weaving. But the Mauryan emperors had to depend on a sophisticated network of spies to keep an eye on officials across the empire since they were always afraid of assassinations and plots against them. When Emperor Ashoka ascended to the throne in around 268 BCE, the Mauryan empire reached its pinnacle of grandeur and ushered in a legacy of colossal building that shaped the ancient world. The tale of Ashoka's transition from a merciless warrior general to a pious man of peace with a global purpose gave rise to his opulence. He prevailed in a fierce battle that is thought to have claimed 100,000 lives as the commander of the Mauryan army besieging the kingdom of Kalinga. The bloodshed sparked an awakening that introduced Ashoka to Buddhism and policies meant to advance peace and humane governance across India. He so backed missionaries' attempts to introduce Buddhism to Sri Lanka and Burma. His new legal system provided protection to those who were most in need, including the sick and injured, the impoverished and defenceless, and those navigating the empire as travellers. By constructing hospitals, drilling wells, erecting rest stops along India's highways, and dispatching itinerant magistrates to settle conflicts and administer justice in isolated regions, his ministers carried out the wishes of their emperor. Additionally, Ashoka left a lasting impression on the art world. He commanded that his proverbs and moral precepts be carved on stone pillars placed all throughout India. The political and spiritual structure of the Indian kingdom is exemplified by the Pillars of Ashoka. The Mauryans sought to show their citizens virtue and kindness while enforcing less strict authority through Buddhism, art patronage, and imposing architecture. Leaders like Ashoka anticipated that, if not money and other gifts to reward the virtuous and allure supporters, then the people's devotion and duty would be inspired by appreciation of their achievements. The adaptability of the Mauryan political structure is further illustrated by the Ashoka Pillars. Inscriptions bearing comprehensive synopses of the Mauryan standards of conduct and social order were found on those nearest to the capital. Further out, in recently conquered lands, the pillars propagated extremely basic doctrines, indicating the ruler's intention to permit local autonomy and cultures to flourish as long as his subjects complied with specific universal standards and paid their taxes. Following Ashoka's reign, other Indian monarchs attempted to follow the Mauryan tradition in order to govern a heterogeneous nation. Following the eventual fall of the Mauryan Empire in 185 BCE, India saw further division and was ruled by independent towns and cities as well as little rival nations. It was a collection of minor regional kingdoms by the early centuries of the common period, bound together by a similar culture that included Buddhism, Hinduism, a canon of Sanskrit books, and the caste system.
