However, the Hellenistic era also saw the revival and reassertion of native customs in addition to the spread of Greek civilization. The Ptolemies assumed the role of pharaonic power in Egypt, honouring the gods of old and funding the building of opulent temples with hieroglyphic inscriptions. Seleucus I Nicator and his allies easily beat Antigonus Monophthalmus' armies in the Battle of Ipsus in 301 BCE, a battle that exemplified the shifting alliances and power dynamics that marked this volatile time. Rome's steady ascent to prominence as the leading Mediterranean powerhouse marked the end of the Hellenistic era. Hellenistic political independence came to an end with the Roman conquests in the eastern Mediterranean, which culminated in the defeat of Cleopatra VII and the subjugation of Egypt in 30 BCE. However, the Hellenistic era left a lasting legacy that shaped the creative, intellectual, and cultural traditions of later civilizations and maintained Greek civilization's long impact on the global scene.
