THE AMERICAS IN ANCIENT TIMES HIST 1301 | History Peopling the Eastern Woodlands Immediately east of the vast Great Plains is the lush Eastern Woodlands, an area rich in natural resources and wildlife. This territory, which stretches from the enormous Mississippi River basin to the Atlantic coast, served as a refuge for many native tribes, who prospered in its bounty. A multitude of plants and animals waited in this verdant landscape, offering chances for exploitation as well as nutrition. In addition to providing fresh water, the system of rivers and lakes that crisscrossed the area made it easier for people to live by their productive shores. Rich and varied, the Eastern Woodlands provided a wide range of resources to meet the needs of its people. The fauna provided a readily available supply of protein, ranging from rabbits to deer, and edible plants like nuts from oak, chestnut, and beech trees complemented their diet. Access to saltwater marine life along the shore enhanced their food supplies even further, allowing for a diversified and well-balanced diet that supported growing populations. More permanent settlements could be established since there was less of a need for frequent migration due to the availability of resources and favourable circumstances. The Eastern Woodlands saw a large demographic transition around 6500 BCE, which was accompanied by a considerable rise in population. Large-scale earthworks were being built all throughout the region at the same time as this population boom, with modern-day Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Florida being particularly notable examples. With a discovery date of around 3900 BCE, Watson Brake in northern Louisiana is one of these ancient marvels that is the oldest. This archaeological gem has a number of man-made earth mounds grouped in a circle, some reaching heights of up to 25 feet. Watson Brake is thought to have been used seasonally by early hunter-gatherer societies as a centre for ceremonies and maybe even as a venue for social gatherings, however its exact function is still unknown. Even though Watson Brake may not have clear evidence of burial customs, other Eastern Woodlands sites provide light on the social and spiritual customs of the prehistoric settlers. Expansive cemetery from the same era have been discovered in Illinois, Tennessee, and other forested areas; they include the remains of hundreds of people. Certain tombs are embellished with individualised objects, such artwork and weaponry, providing insights into the customs and hierarchies of these prehistoric communities. These cemeteries provide as evidence of growing populations as well as the advent of a more sedentary way of life, marked by stable communities with well-defined rites and traditions. Essentially, the Eastern Woodlands of North America fostered prosperous societies whose legacy is preserved in the archaeological record, acting as a kind of human civilization's crucible.
