The combination of religious and military might produced a mutually beneficial partnership in which both sides benefited from their affiliation. However, the Church's goals went beyond simple political calculation. The spread of the Roman Catholic Church's interpretation of Christian doctrine and practice was the fundamental goal of its mission. In order to do this, the Church launched a determined campaign to convert the wide range of individuals living in Western Europe to its brand of Christianity. This missionary enthusiasm was motivated by a deep conviction that the Church's cause was righteous as well as a desire to increase the Church's influence. Suppression of alternative Christian groups that strayed from the Church's traditional doctrines was a major focus of its efforts. The most prominent group among them were the Arians, who contested the central claim of the Church about Jesus' divinity. Such dissension was seen by the Church as a threat that may weaken its power and cause division among the faithful. As a result, the Church did not hold back in its efforts to suppress heresy and maintain the supremacy of its own doctrinal orthodoxy. The conflicting theological philosophies and the changing political climate in post-Roman Europe created the conditions for the rise of a new civilization, known as mediaeval Europe. This era, which was marked by a fusion of Christian, Germanic, and Roman traditions, saw the establishment of organisations and customs that would influence the development of European history for many years. The enduring effects of this historical period may be seen in the scholastic tradition, the feudal system, and contemporary ideas about religion, culture, and government.
