Among the great empires were the Ottoman Empire in the Mediterranean, the Safavid Empire in Iran, and the Mughal Empire in India. Numerous such tiny kingdoms might be found in regions such as central Asia, Morocco, Indonesia, and the Swahili Coast. Nevertheless, despite this governmental division, there remained a certain level of unity among the various Islamic regions, which was mostly due to their shared faith. Although rival Islamic kingdoms might not agree on matters of official doctrine or politics, intellectuals and religious clerics known as ulama, who serve as the principal interpreters of Islamic law, collaborated and engaged in scholarly debates with one another through correspondence. All Muslims were bound together by same fundamental beliefs and a love for Muhammad's teachings. Religious and political institutions often retained a similar form and purpose in various contexts: ulama provided nonbinding legal opinions known as fatwas to political rulers and common populations, while judges handled legal and religious conflicts. Thus, ulama contributed to the unification of the increasingly heterogeneous Islamic world. Islam was also unified and expanded by groups of mystics known as Sufis. Sufis used fasting, meditation, and ritual prayer, just like mystics in other faiths, to have a direct encounter with God and receive heavenly love and knowledge. They frequently entered a trance-like condition in which they might sense the divine presence by using dance, poetry, and music to transcend their relationship to the outside world. During the Umayyad Caliphate in the seventh century, Sufism emerged. Sufi organisations had spread throughout the Islamic world by the sixteenth century. These orders, which some let women into, were centred around a leader who also functioned as the group's religious instructor. They were sometimes referred to as "brotherhoods." Sufis who attained a certain level of intimacy with God were considered saints, and pilgrims would gather at their tombs. Sufis played an important role in spreading Islam throughout the world, serving as missionaries of the growing faith because their practices frequently drew the interest of common people who had little interest in intricate theological treatises and obscure legal debates. By 1500, the Islamic faith had spread greatly as a result of migration, trade, Sufi missionary activity, and imperial conquest. Muslims typically developed well-known Islamic religious organisations in their new communities after migrating to other countries. This gave residents of the area as well as tourists, dealers, and travellers a certain sense of constancy. Additionally, when different polities arose, collapsed, and were replaced, it promoted mobility and interchange within the Islamic world and contributed to the unification of Muslims. As a result, there is now a significant regional and cultural variety within the faith, with new converts blending Islamic customs with native ways of life in areas like Indonesia and India. Arabic script was also modified to write regional tongues like Kurdish, Pashto, Urdu, and Punjabi throughout the Islamic world. Not every person who was exposed to Islam or integrated into the Islamic community became an Islamist. Within the broader Islamic context, a significant number of Christians persisted in practicing their religion throughout southwest Asia and southeast Europe. There were times when the spread of Islam in India gave Hinduism and other religions a boost. People in these non-Muslim communities who were protected by Muslim rulers, known as dhimmis, were obliged to recognise the authority of Muslim leadership even though they were free to practise their religions. The goal of the dhimmi system was to give religious minorities legal protection and official status within the Muslim community, but it also frequently came with limitations on their public lives, such as what they could wear and the types of jobs they could hold, which in turn restricted their ability to advance in society. The poll tax, or jizya, was the most prevalent burden. Dhimmis frequently faced more hardship in life than Muslims in similar social classes, and in many cases, non-Muslims converted in order to elevate their social status and increase their opportunities for upward mobility. In order to connect with Islamic commerce networks and possible business partners, merchants frequently converted to Islam. In order to marry a Muslim woman for love or to get connected to a wealthy family, non-Muslim males had to convert. While Muslim women could only marry Muslim men, Christian and Jewish women could marry Muslim men without converting.
