During this time, Islam began to progressively spread over West Africa, which had a major impact on the unification of formerly mostly regional trade into a system of trade that genuinely crossed deserts. An important factor in the development of the networks of trade across the Sahara Desert was the introduction of Islam among nomadic peoples like the Tuareg and Sanhaja of the Niger area. The development of common norms and guidelines ingrained in Islamic history and law was one of the main forces behind the expansion of Islam among African peoples. These values were upheld by pious Muslim caravanners and traders, who helped to build a culture of respect and trust among the trading groups. Not only was the decision to convert to Islam a spiritual one, but it also had practical advantages for African traders and merchants. For example, Islamic contract law offered assurances and safeguards that made commerce transactions easier and promoted an atmosphere that was favourable to wealth and economic expansion. Furthermore, when promissory notes and credit extensions between various caravan trade participants proliferated, more intricate and comprehensive business agreements were made possible. As oases developed, they were important hubs for trade and communication, enabling the movement of products, ideas, and information across great distances. African traders became increasingly literate in Arabic, allowing them to take a more active role in the expanding trans-Saharan commerce network. The severe terms placed on non-Muslim people by invading Muslim soldiers further exacerbated the economic incentives for conversion to Islam. These conditions included requests for enslaved people, mostly from the Amazigh villages, as well as excessive taxes. Since it was against Islamic law to enslave other Muslims, many Amazigh people faced the prospect of becoming slaves and decided to convert to Islam in order to escape this destiny. For many Africans, then, becoming Muslim became a question of self-preservation as much as spiritual loyalty. The governing classes of Africa embraced Islam as it extended southward into the savanna area beneath the Sahara, frequently assimilating it into their customs in a practice known as syncretism. Through the incorporation of Islamic rituals into pre-existing social and cultural structures, this syncretic approach made Islam more palatable to a wide range of African cultures. Moreover, the governing classes, without their own alphabets, began to seek out Muslim administrators who were fluent in Arabic script. These administrators contributed significantly to trade and government, enhancing Islam's stature and power in African civilizations. The dissemination of Islam throughout Africa was also greatly aided by interactions between Muslim traders and indigenous tribes. Muslim traders and native women married one other, and the children were raised in Muslim homes, transferring the religion from one generation to the next. Cultural exchanges have aided in the spread of Islamic principles and promoted social cohesiveness and integration among various ethnic and religious groupings. With the main help of the trans-Saharan trade routes, Islam had spread to areas as far north as Lake Chad and the Kingdom of Kanem by the thirteenth century. Along with similar beliefs, traditions, and practices, the Arabic language promoted increased commerce and economic success over great distances by forming a network of trustworthy believers. Not only was the extensive expansion of Islam a result of religious conversion, but it also bears witness to the significant socio-economic changes resulting from trans-Saharan commerce and cultural contact.
